Earth Keepers Building A Relationship With Nature
This week, Koorginal has magically transformed into the Earth Keepers Training Centre where Year 5 boys are using their heads, hearts and hands to understand the natural world.
Earth Keepers is an Earth Education programme, which has been developed over time by a team of educators from the Institute of Earth Education. Earth Education believes that the Earth is endangered due to human impact and lifestyles that are not in harmony with the systems of life on the planet. Earth Education focuses on basic ecological processes, helping the boys to understand their relationship with the Earth.
The Year 5s’ Earth Keeper programme started in their classrooms earlier this term, and continues into term two, tying in with subjects such as Science, Environment Studies, Art, English and Geography. Kooringal Assistant Director Kate Mitchell said the boys were enjoying the magic, mystery and knowledge in becoming an Earth Keeper Apprentice.
“My Magic Spot is on a rock, overlooking a deep valley. It is so quiet that I can hear the bees buzzing... and it all smells so fresh and clean. Everything is still... it makes me feel relaxed and free. Like I am the only person on earth.” - Oliver Ferrari
The Year 5 boys begin their Earth Keepers Apprenticeship for three days at Kooringal, with the final group finishing next week.
