Music Scholarships (Two) for Year 7, 2011

Music scholarships are awarded to boys who show outstanding ability, enthusiasm and commitment on one or more instruments. Scholarships provide half remission of the annual tuition fee and music tuition on one instrument. Instrumental and Choral Bursaries, which cover the cost of instrumental or voice tuition, are also available. Applicants are required to attend an audition in May 2010. Phone 9442 1648 for details.

Music Scholarships

Christ Church awards music scholarships to incoming boys who are entering the Senior School. Each scholarship has a value of 50% of the School fees plus free tuition on one instrument and is tenable for the time that the boy is at the School, subject to the maintenance of high standards of practice, lesson attendance and ensemble participation.

Instrumental Bursaries

Instrumental bursaries are open to new boys entering the Senior School and to musically talented boys currently in the Preparatory School and Senior School. An instrumental bursary provides free tuition on one instrument and is tenable for the time that the boy is at the School, subject to the maintenance of high standards of practice, lesson attendance and ensemble participation.

Choral Bursaries

Choral bursaries are offered to boys who have been accepted as choristers into St George’s Cathedral Choir, reinforcing traditional links between the School and Cathedral. Choral bursaries provide free tuition on one instrument or voice and are tenable for the time that the boy is at the School, subject to the maintenance of high standards of practice, lesson attendance and ensemble participation. Bursary applicants must be currently enrolled at the School, or have been offered a place at the School in 2009. These restrictions do not apply to Scholarship applicants.

Choral Bursary Provisions
A choral bursary provides tuition in voice or on one instrument to encourage enthusiastic and talented music students.

Eligibility
Choral bursaries are available to boys currently enrolled at Christ Church Grammar School who are members of the St George’s Cathedral Choir. The bursary is not automatic upon entering St George’s Choir and is subject to either technical proficiency on an instrument, or commencing tuition on an instrument chosen after consultation with the Director of Music.

Auditions
Choral bursary applicants will be required to attend an audition with the Director of Music.

Choral Bursary Obligations
A choral bursary holder will demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for singing and for an instrument as well as dedication to practice and leadership in choral performance. He will also participate in the School Choir and at least one other ensemble. He will maintain high standards of punctuality and musicianship and is encouraged to pursue Music as an academic subject.

Bursary Review
A choral bursary holder will need to re-audition for an Instrumental bursary in the event that he should leave the Cathedral Choir. The Director of Music will review a student’s bursary if he fails to honour his obligations.

Instrumental Teachers
The general information regarding instrumental music lessons applies to choral bursary holders. Normally, lessons will be provided by the School’s instrumental teachers. However, external teachers may be accepted at the discretion of the Director of Music. Where another teacher is approved, the School will remit the standard School music lesson fee towards the cost of lessons. Any change of instrumental teacher should be discussed with the Director of Music.
