Refectory Filled With All That Jazz

Students and staff were treated to a special jazz performance in the Refectory at lunchtime on Tuesday 24 June.

An all-star band featuring Christ Church music teachers and professional musicians from Perth’s local jazz scene played a number of standards, including popular tunes “Locomotion”, “Spain”, “Stella by Starlight” and “The Chicken”.

The band included Thane Mandin on drums, Paul Millard on saxophone, Marty Pervan on trumpet, Paul Tanner on percussion, Tilman Robinson on trombone, Antony Gray on guitar and Rob Pisano on bass.

Music teacher Thane Mandin, who organised the band, said, “I certainly feel that the main value of the staff performing is for the students, (in particular the music students) to hear us in action practising what we preach as it were. They hear us in lessons with them, but to hear us performing in an ensemble situation is the real deal.”

Many of the students were pleased that they could watch a high quality performance while eating their lunch. Mr Mandin said he believed the response from the students and staff was highly positive and is certain more of these performances will be held in the future.
