FROM THE HEADMASTER

In what I hope will be my last communication with you regarding the H1N1 swine flu issue, you will find HERE the latest information I have received from the Association of Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA). We seem now to be ‘in the clear’. I reiterate my thanks made last week to you all for the manner in which you have supported the School through this time.

I am very pleased to inform the school community that our next major building project was unanimously approved by the Claremont City Council at its meeting held last Tuesday evening. This project, on the northwest corner of the school campus, will commence shortly. As with all such approvals, it brings much excitement for it heralds improved educational opportunities for our boys and continues the positive physical development of our campus. This particular project will provide some 1,100 square metres of undercover sports and play space, which will be shared between both Prep and Senior School boys. This same space will also serve as a multi-functional area for a variety of presentations and events. It will be adjoined to the current school gymnasium’s main floor and through its design complete a campus-wide wheelchair disabled access project that was begun in 2001. Underneath this elevated floor will be accommodation for multi-purpose classrooms, our Cadet Unit and grounds, maintenance and service departments. Further news of this project will be provided to you as it unfolds.

FROM THE HEAD OF THE LW PARRY PREPARATORY SCHOOL

prep-autumn-leaves.jpg

A sense of normality returned to the LW Parry Preparatory School this week as we had an almost full complement of boys. The events that were unfortunately postponed due to the issues surrounding the H1N1 virus – Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day and the performance for the IPSHA Performing Arts Festival – will be rescheduled into Term 3.

Excursions

The Year 7s hit the ground running with an excursion on Tuesday that, from what I have heard, included walking quite a few kilometres. The boys visited some of Western Australia’s historic sites in a history walk including a visit to the Fremantle Prison. The Year 7s then visited the Shipwreck Gallery and Maritime Museum. This excursion also had the added advantage of involving our Year 7 fathers. Our dads are our most significant learning role models and I thank the fathers who were able to attend. I hope you enjoyed the walk!

Another exciting Fremantle excursion involved our Year 1 students attending a clinic at the Fremantle Oval conducted by the Fremantle Dockers. This event was the culmination of a series of incursions by Dockers players and their mascot. The boys had a fantastic day and, although the Dockers are finally looking to recruit youth, none of our boys were drafted on the day!

Parent Discussion Group

Next week is our Parents’ Discussion Group and I am really looking forward to Mr Wayne Revitt’s presentation on Promoting Positive Behaviours in your Boy. Mr Revitt is an excellent presenter and this will be an interesting and informative presentation. The Discussion Group begins in the Prep School Staffroom after Friday Assembly between 9.30am and 10.00am.

HUMANITIES

Visit to Claremont Museum

hum1.JPG hum4.JPG hum2.JPG hum3.JPG hum5.JPG

On Tuesday morning, Mr Gibson’s Year 8 Humanities class visited Claremont Museum to experience a brief taste of 1860s life on the shores of Freshwater Bay. An enthusiastic and inquisitive group made scones, ‘from scratch’, first grinding their own flour then adding a few currants and water before baking them in a cast-iron, wood-fired stove. The boys also attended a lesson in the formidable Mrs Herbert’s classroom, in the original school building, and washed dirty laundry with just a bar of soap, a washboard, very cold water and plenty of elbow grease!

As they departed the scones were ready to eat and unanimously declared to be absolutely delicious! Thank you to the wonderful staff at Claremont Museum who made the all too short visit so memorable.

BBQ at Home Games

Initiated by Leo Crohan, father of Year 11 student William, some of our parents have organised a BBQ and drinks at all senior home games this season. Boys can purchase a sausage in a bun and a drink for $3. All money raised goes towards sports equipment for the School. This is a terrific vehicle for parents to support the School, their sons and sport at Christ Church.

The remaining home games for senior boys (ie. 1sts, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths) are on the following dates:

  • Saturday 20 June vs Trinity College
  • Saturday 27 June vs Scotch
  • Saturday 1 August vs Wesley

He is always looking for parent help and would welcome offers of assistance in any capacity.
