Friday 11 May 2012

There are a number of programmes offered by the School that result in some staff having a role across both our Preparatory and Senior schools. Brother James in his role as Director of the Pilgrimage of Hope (PoH), our community service outreach programme, is one such example. Brother James will leave the School mid-year to return to his ‘home’ at St Mark’s Abbey in Camperdown, Victoria. During his time with us, Brother James has also taught Religious Education (most recently in the Prep School), assisted the Chaplain, helped in our residential community and offered counselling. You will find here a letter sent by Brother James to the extended PoH community and staff earlier this week explaining his departure.

The School and the wider community have been blessed by the opportunities that have been provided through the PoH. In the last six years there have been more than 1,000 ‘pilgrims’ from the wider Christ Church community (including parents, members of the local parish community, our boys, Old Boys and girls from our neighbourng schools) who have all had the opportunity to serve some of the most under privileged communities in the world. The programme, based as it is on the spirituality of Mother Teresa of Calcutta, has been a unique and special opportunity for those who have chosen to participate. PoH will in the future be co-ordinated and directed through St Mark’s Abbey in Camperdown, and I am sure that you would join with me in wishing Brother James all the best with its ongoing development and his vocation there.

The School remains committed to providing the opportunity for our boys to be involved in local, national and international service-based experiences. It is this priority that brought Brother James and the Pilgrimage of Hope to the School in 2006 and has seen its subsequent growth and support. It is now my intent to pause and reflect on how we will move forward in this area, given the interest and support in our community for this type of programme.

As always, should you have any concerns about any aspect of the School and would like to make contact with me, please do not hesitate to do so by email gwynne@ccgs.wa.edu.au or by telephoning my Executive Assistant, Wendy Macdougall, on 9442 1502.

The National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) nominations have opened. The awards honour exemplary teachers in Australian schools. They are public recognition of the teaching profession and specifically those teachers whose inspirational approach to education stimulates student learning. I would encourage you to nominate your son’s teacher for the awards as one way of showing your appreciation for their hard work and dedication for your son. Nominations can be made via the NEiTA webite www.neita.com.

Many parents have asked me about bidding farewell to our long-standing Prep School secretary, Rita Willard, who retired unexpectedly at the end of 2011. Mrs Willard has been very busy with many commitments, however will be attending our Winter Music Concert on Friday, 6 July for her farewell. I will be hosting a morning tea after the concert for staff and parents. Mrs Willard made a significant contribution to the life of the Prep School assisting three Heads of the Prep School, co-ordinating the successful Anglicare Christmas Hampers and always being there for boys and parents alike. If you wish to attend the morning tea,  RSVP via www.trybooking.com/BLTU.

Book Fair and Morning Tea for Parents

Starting Week 5 - Monday 21 May

boys

The Preparatory School Book Fair is fast approaching. It's in Week 5, starting Monday 21 May.

The Fair is held each year to spark the boys' interest in reading and to encourage them to read more. Books are sold at reduced prices and the commission is kept to support charity. This year it will once again go to the Angel Academy in Nepal which has been connected to the school through the Pilgrimage of Hope. Photos will be in the next newsletter.

Boys will view the books in Library lessons and receive a letter with a wish list to bring home to parents. Parents are then asked to decide which books to buy and return the order and payment to school.

A morning tea for parents will be held on Wednesday 23 May from 9.00 to 10.00am in the Prep Library. Parents may come and buy books at that time and enjoy a cuppa with other parents. Payment is by Eftpos or cash.

PP to Year 6

The social highlight of the year for the Year 12 boys is the School Ball. It certainly did prove to be a terrific event for all concerned last Saturday night. The boys and their partners deserve much credit and praise for the manner in which they conducted themselves, and the appreciation they showed to the staff present was greatly appreciated. Their conduct may even have set a new benchmark.

This week there has been a buzz around the Houses with the final preliminary round of the House Arts Cup held yesterday. Later in the term, the Houses will move into the semi-finals, based on the results of the three preliminary rounds, with finals in Week 9. Next Friday afternoon all boys in the Senior School will have an opportunity to compete for their House in Football, Soccer, Handball, Touch Rugby or Cross Country as the House Teams Carnival takes place at McGillivray Oval. This is a great opportunity for boys to get involved and show the strength of their House spirit. Parents are welcome to come along and support their sons.

Finally, as the weather changes and the traffic congestion on our roads increases, may I again remind boys and parents of the need to take particular care when crossing Stirling Highway and Queenslea Drive. Late yesterday afternoon, a student had a lucky escape from injury when he was hit by a car, while crossing Stirling Highway.

Legends at Lunchtime

Old Boy comes to speak to boys about legal careers next Thursday 17 May

The Old Boys' Association (OBA) is delighted to work with the Senior School in bringing former students to speak to our current students, to speak about career options based on their own experiences. The 'Legends at Lunchtime' series runs over Terms 2 and 3 each year. Each session is held in Q1 at 12.45 over lunch (which is provided by the OBA).

Next Thursday Haaron Bokhari (1995 cohort) will be speaking to the boys. He graduated in law from UWA and joined legal firm Freehills for 8 years. In 2008 he joined some Freehills colleagues to start their own legal practice ‘Balance Legal’. Balance Legal is a legal outsourcing firm which provides lawyers who work in-house on a casual or short-term basis. Balance Legal has just merged with a similar eastern states company called Advent - so now they've got offices in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Singapore too - pretty exciting for them! Haaron spends much of his time working for a major client, Chevron. This work involves Haaron in travelling to cities where Chevron is active.

Haaron played football at CCGS and went on to play league football for Claremont.

Year 8 Leeuwin Voyage Update and change of pick-up time

The first Leeuwin Voyage for 2012 was completed last week and the reports coming back have been focussed on the tremendous experience that was had by all on board. This first voyage was blessed with exceptional weather and even included a landing on the famous Dirk Hartog Island. I am sure that as the other voyages progress there will be many reflections on the individual experiences provided by this unique opportunity.

Following the experience from the first voyage we need to alter one aspect of the Final Information Document that has been sent to you via your boys. The listed return time of the bus on the Friday evening of each voyage as marked as 8.00pm but is more realistically between 6.00 - 6.30pm. Please make this alteration to the pick-up time for your son, if he hasn't already concluded his voyage.

It would also be appreciated if parents could use the school carparks when collecting their sons, which will enable provision of space in the Queenslea Drive bus bay for the bus to park, the boys to alight and the safe unpacking of bags.
