Friday 19 August 2011

On Wednesday evening I attended the monthly Parents’ Association (PA) meeting. On this occasion there were special reports from our highly successful Uniform Shop and from the PA’s nominee to the School Council, Mrs Fiona Pollard. Mr David Payne, President, called for nominations to the Committee before the AGM on 14 September (see notices for details). We also heard the report on the highly successful ‘Passion for Fashion’ event organised by the Parents’ Auxiliary, the most significant sub committee of the PA.

Throughout my time as Headmaster, the PA has played a significant role. The Association and its subsidiaries form a very significant part of the community life of this School. We rely on the energetic and dynamic contribution made by parents who volunteer. Our programmes are enhanced by this engagement, be it through time or effort on particular tasks and activities or through feedback to the School’s administration.

I would like to encourage all parents to find a way in which they might be able to volunteer to support the culture of what we do here at the School. It is through such involvement the richness of school life is available to the benefit of parents, as well as to the boys. Please have a look at these stories here to look at the variety of ways you can volunteer.

Annual Giving
By now, many parents will have taken the opportunity to invest in our boys’ future with a gift to Annual Giving. So far, the number of donors this year has increased by 24 per cent from last year, which is a fantastic effort. On behalf of the school community, I thank all donors for their generosity. It is pleasing to see our donors proudly displaying their special sticker (of the school crest in white) on their cars as I travel around.

While our donors have increased in numbers, we are currently 11 per cent below the amount raised at this stage last year. With just 46 new gifts, we could lift the amount raised to match last year’s total. So if you have been considering contributing to the campaign, please do. Our shared efforts contribute to the strength of Christ Church and with your gift – we can make a significant difference to make our ‘Future Stronger Together’ through the provision of scholarships and improved facilities.

boys motivation

           lucky oceans

It is interesting how often as parents we underestimate what our boys can do. This thought crossed my mind watching the Pre-Primary, Year 1 and Year 2 boys running their Lap-a-thon on Tuesday. Most parents and teachers, including me, expected a few laps of fast running, then a lot of walking. What we saw was very surprising. The boys just kept running and running. Every boy circumnavigated the track (which was more than 200 metres) more than six times, in just 15 minutes. I heard about some boys who ran well over ten laps. Considering that many boys had been sponsored by their families for each lap, there may have been a costly underestimation in some homes!

Our boys, given the opportunity can do many things, while we as parents believe they need assistance. Whether this be carrying their own bag to class, organising their own day, taking responsibility for their homework or wearing the correct uniform; the boys need to take on these responsibilities and we need to give them the opportunity to be responsible.

This morning we acknowledged the visual arts with the Art Assembly. Our art programme is so magnificent I cannot wait until the Art Exhibition in Week 10. As an interesting juxtaposition with the fine arts I also presented our ICAS Science Test and Australian Mathematics Challenge Distinctions and High Distinctions. Our boys received 42 Distinctions and High Distinctions for these voluntary competitions. Aiden Rose and Albert Smith deserve a special mention, since they both scored the highest scores in Western Australia in the Science test.

Music Department

Prep School Music Department Fundraising Practice-a-thon

Would you like to help raise money for Christ Church House while having fun, playing your musical instrument? Now you can and it’s easy! During Term 3, the Prep school Music Department is running a fundraising practice-o-thon, where boys can be sponsored for every practice session they do on their instrument.

How to do it
Ask your family, friends, team-mates and neighbours to pledge a small amount of money, either per practice session or just a set amount. A suitable rate per session would be between 5 and 50c per practice session.

Fill in the details below, and get practicing!

Then collect the money, put your information form and the amount you have raised in an envelope and bring it to Miss Seaman by Friday 23 September.

The amount of money raised will be announced at the end of term assembly.

For any queries, please contact Miss Seaman at sseaman@ccgs.wa.edu.au

The very fact that I was tempted to perform ‘live’ in front of eleven hundred boys on Thursday morning means, to me at least, that the annual House Shout competition has come of age. Dare I share with the community that I can still recite all the lyrics to ‘My Sharona’ which was performed by the Craigie crew or that the eventual winner of the contest, Blokes from Noake, singing ‘Walking on Sunshine’ brought back memories of teenage years... Anyway, my point is that the atmosphere and engagement of all boys on Thursday was fantastic. Many hours of hard work have gone in to making the House Shout a memorable one for all.

Similarly, the exhibition of the House Murals in the Chapel forecourt displayed the creative talents of many boys who chose to get involved in this year’s theme: ‘Arts Smart - Multiple Intelligences’. Each House Design Team had to devise a positive image and message that incorporates their House as part of their design for their advertising billboard. In a very close contest, Romsey was judged as narrow winners from Hill and Wolsey. The murals will now be put on prominent display in the various House areas throughout the school.

This weekend marks the completion of another Winter Sport season. The School strongly advocates the benefits of the compulsory sport program and I am pleased to report that overall, across all codes and all teams, the spirit shown by boys competing has been very positive. In some cases, teams have had to contend with few victories while in others their success has been outstanding. That of course is the nature of sporting competitions. Finally, I would like to thank all parents who have not only supported their sons, but have prepared morning teas for all, at fixtures throughout the season.

The conclusion of the House Beatty Cup competition will occur on Thursday week when the Annual Athletics Carnival is held at AK Reserve next to Challenge Stadium. Parents are welcome to come and support their sons during this whole day event. The notices below include the details for this event.

House Athletics Carnival - Thursday 1 September

The 2011 Secondary School House Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 1 September at the WA Athletics Stadium, next to Challenge Stadium. The stadium has very good facilities for athletes and spectators and we anticipate an excellent day of competition.

All Christ Church students in Years 7-12 are expected to attend the House Athletics Carnival. The dress for all boys is House singlet/polo shirt and House winter top, School tracksuit pants or PE shorts, white socks and joggers. All boys must wear House Top when competing.

Parents are most welcome to attend and are asked to sit in the seats at the east end by the finish line, or with the boys in House areas. Alcohol consumption is not permitted. Programmes will be available from the results desk near the finish line during the day. A copy of the event timetable is on the school web site.

Parking will be available on the northern side of the Challenge Stadium. The entrance is off Stephenson Avenue at the same point of entry as if you were arriving for a swimming carnival. Follow the signs at the roundabout. Challenge Stadium is a busy place at this time, so an early arrival is suggested to avoid missing the start.

Challenge Stadium charges an entrance fee of $3.00 for all non-student spectators. Cashiers are located at the entry points. Students do not have to pay on entry.

Public transport to the AK Reserve is limited. However, school buses provide transport for the boys to and from the stadium from the school. The buses leave the School at 8.00am and depart the Stadium at approximately 2.15pm. Boys wishing to use the School buses are asked to advise their Head of House. It is anticipated that the Carnival, including the presentation of trophies, will be completed by 2.10pm. All boys are expected to remain seated in their House area until that time and will be dismissed by their Head of Houses.

We look forward to seeing you there.
