Friday 20 July 2012
I write to you as the winter in Perth is at its most beautiful - crisp mornings and clear, blue skies. My appreciation of this has been highlighted having spent some time last week in Melbourne - enough said!
The non-term time period for the School has again been active. Our senior cricketers have managed to squeeze some games in between the rain of an English summer and Olympic mayhem in the UK; our sailing team at the Australian Championships (having topped the round robin after 180 races) finished a wonderful third on Albert Park Lake in Melbourne; our senior skiers showed their skills in Cardrona in New Zealand; our Prep School skiers peppered the slopes at Falls Creek and some of our Senior School cadets led the way at Leeuwin Barracks in promotion courses.
On Queenslea Drive a large number of our support staff members, led by our Director of ICT Services, Dr Geoffrey Alagoda, have implemented the School’s move to a new administration software system. This transition went live today. Bringing different systems into one enterprise-wide system has been an enormous task. As much as we have sought to make this transition as seamless as possible, there will undoubtedly be the occasional ‘glitch’. If any quirks impact you, I would like to ask you for your patience and understanding in alerting us, and working through the solutions. As we train all staff and prioritise issues to be resolved, there may be some delays. There is much going on here behind the scenes so your support will be much appreciated.
There are a couple of changes to Executive staff in Term 3 as a consequence of Roger Bayly’s sabbatical leave and Mark Morrissy’s forthcoming long service leave. Darren McPartland has been appointed as the Acting Director of Planning & Co-curricular for the second semester. Mark will act as Deputy Headmaster/Head of the Senior School until mid-term upon Roger’s return.
As always, should you have any concerns about any aspect of the School and would like to make contact with me, please do not hesitate to do so by email gwynne@ccgs.wa.edu.au or by telephoning my Executive Assistant, Wendy Macdougall, on 9442 1502.

The final week of last term was a celebration of the rich talents of our boys in the academic, musical and sporting domains. At the final assembly we recognised and gave our best wishes to the eight Year 6 boys who will be representing the School at the International Mathematics Competition in Taiwan during Week 1 of this term. I am sure they will do us proud. The final assembly was also a celebration of the musical talents of our boys. They put on a marvelous show of their individual and collective talents. My thanks to Sarah Seaman, Stephanie Harford, Rhiannon Taylor, Luke Hynes and Joe Grech for their work with our boys.
We also celebrated our third consecutive win in the JPSSA Cross Country Carnival. It was a wonderful effort by the boys, especially considering that so many boys were ‘called up’ on the morning of the carnival to cover for others due to injury and illness. Please see the news section for more details.
Term 3 is an exciting and event-filled term with highlights such as the Pre-Primary to Year 3 Lap-a-thon, Athletics Carnivals, Book Week and Week of the Arts, as well as Grandparents’ Day, Learning Journeys and the Year 6 Father Son Breakfast. Please check your son’s diary for the dates of these key events.
This week parents will receive an e-mail with an on-line survey for your input on school reports – please do take the time to review and respond with your views. As I am attending professional learning through week one of term, Brad Hilliard will be welcoming the boys back at 8.25am on Wednesday, 25 July. I look forward to returning at the start of week two.

Children in Years 4 to 6 are becoming more sophisticated in their cognitive, physical and emotional functioning when compared to their younger peers. The challenge for parents is to find a balance between their child’s increasing capabilities and their ability to cope with the associated changes and pressures along the path to adolescence. This workshop will provide parents with an overview of developmental milestones and explore some strategies that may help prepare their child for the journey.

The holiday period has once again seen many boys engaged in a range of school activities. The UK Cricket Tour is in its final days and while it has been wet there has been a lot of cricket played. The skiers have been blessed with some great ‘powder’ in New Zealand and the senior cadets have been undertaking leadership training with great success. I commend all participants for taking the opportunity to further their development through such experiences.
As we prepare to return to school on Wednesday I am reminded that the best way to be successful is to ‘be prepared’. It is a primary responsibility for all boys as they commence a new term, with renewed energy and focus, to ensure that they strive hard to achieve goals set earlier in the year.
There are many windows through which we are judged as individuals and collectively as a school. Personal presentation is the most visible example. To this end I urge parents to carefully scrutinise their son’s appearance and presentation of school uniform before the mad rush takes place on Wednesday morning. The school day begins at 8.25am and lateness simply starts the day off on the back foot, so I ask for the assistance of parents to ensure that boys arrive on time.
Starting the term mid-week also leads me to remind boys and parents of our PSA fixture against Aquinas this Friday and Saturday. We are now into the second round where we can measure our progress against the scores achieved in the first round. I look forward to seeing a healthy contingent of parent support at all of our remaining winter fixtures this term.

Year 12
WACE Stage 2 or 3 Courses
A reminder to parents for Year 12 students enrolled in Stage 2 or 3 courses: students are required to sit for, and make a genuine attempt at, the WACE examination in that subject (unless an exemption form has been signed).
Any student who should sit an examination and chooses not to, or chooses not to make a genuine attempt in the examination, will not get a course report in that course. Nor will the grade achieved in the school-based assessment be counted towards the C average for the WACE. As a consequence, a student may not meet the requirements to receive a WACE (secondary graduation).
Students and parents should be aware that there have been candidates in the past who have not achieved Secondary Graduation because of their failure to sit an examination or because they have not made a genuine attempt in that examination – it's vital that this is understood by everyone.
WACE timetable
The WACE timetable for 2012 will be posted on the SCSA website from Friday 27 July onwards – Year 12 students have been advised to go to www.scsa.wa.edu.au for details.
WACE personal details and enrolments
Year 12 students are encouraged to check their personal details and enrolments for WACE online at www.wace.wa.edu.au or via www.facebook.com/scsawa. If there are any discrepancies, they need to see Ms Brophy without delay – please do not ring the SCSA before you talk to me.

Postcard from the New Zealand Ski Trip

Since arriving at our accommodation at Lake Wanaka on the South Island, the boys have enjoyed three fantastic days on the slopes of Cardrona. Given most of the boys on this year’s trip were beginner skiers and snowboarders; it has been fantastic to see just how far they have progressed in three days. Tomorrow, the boys take a well-deserved rest day exploring Queenstown including jet boating and taking in the spectacular view from the Skyline Gondola over Queenstown. At the top of the mountain, they’ll enjoy luge rides, a Maori cultural show and recharge the fuel tanks with a buffet meal at the Skyline restaurant. For the final two days of the trip, we will be back enjoying the snow at Cardrona.

Postcard from the UK Cricket Tour

It may be raining but the CCGS Cricket Tour never stops! We are currently at Shrewsbury School where the deluge over the past few days prevented us from playing. However, today the rain stopped and the boys managed to train in the outdoor nets in the morning and in the school’s indoor cricket centre in the evening.
There was no chance of play in the Midlands with flood warnings for the weekend while Whitgift may have provided the best venue and fantastic hospitality on the homestays – our performance did not. In spite of this, morale has been good and the boys are being entertained. Bad weather in London allowed us time to do more ‘touristy things’ than on previous tours. Tonbridge and Hambledon were cancelled due to the weather but the boys did chalk up their first win against Felsted. Overall, the competition has been strong. Tomorrow, the weather looks rosier for our game against the Shropshire Under 17s at Shrewsbury Cricket Club.
