Friday 22 June 2012
On Tuesday evening I had the pleasure to attend two quite different School events. The first was the Scholars’ Recital, featuring performances of our music scholarship students. The second was a Senior School debate between Christ Church and Presbyterian Ladies’ College, as a part of the West Australian Debating League annual competition. Both were events where our boys performed admirably and I was very proud of them. For me, the evening captured the essence of the language we use to describe our final Phase of Learning for Years 11 and 12, Expertise and Excellence. Although at the recital boys were from a number of years across the School, their standard reflected these words. At the debate, our most accomplished Year 12s presented the most persuasive of arguments.
Excellence is a core value for the School, so we often speak of it. Excellence is not just good it is exemplary and it is something that stands out as a result of the desire, will and effort of the individual or group involved in its creation. I ask it of myself, every staff member and every boy in everything we do. I believe that one of the many elements that are distinctive to Christ Church and is integral to our success, is how we inspire, appreciate and celebrate excellence in the many diverse forms it can take.
As always, should you have any concerns about any aspect of the School and would like to make contact with me, please do not hesitate to do so by email gwynne@ccgs.wa.edu.au or by telephoning my Executive Assistant, Wendy Macdougall, on 9442 1502.

Today the Year 5s visited the Fremantle Prison and Army Museum of WA as part of their work on history. History was one of the first subjects released as part of the Australian Curriculum. The Prep School has been working with the Australian Curriculum in English, Mathematics, Science and History for some time now. Brad Hilliard and our three co-ordinators, Holly Miller, T’Ann Steel and Jane London have been managing this process with class teachers. As we manage this integration, we continue to develop our education programmes to be relevant, engaging and challenging to motivate boys.
Next Tuesday, 26 June from 1.30pm we have our Inter-House Cross Country Carnival for Years 3 to 6, at the Mount Claremont Playing Fields. Please come along to support your son in this wonderful annual event. Boys who make the first 10 places in Years 4 to 6 will represent the School at The Junior PSA Cross Country Carnival, for which we are defending champions. The Pre-Primary to Year 2 students have their long run at the Lap-a-thon next term on 21 August.
Finally, a reminder that we also have Winter Sports and Chess Team photographs on Tuesday, 26 June. These photos are for the boys who have played for the A teams in football, soccer, hockey and rugby or represented the School in chess. Boys need to wear their appropriate team uniform for the photo, and formals for the Chess Team.

International Children's Winter Games 2013 - Participants Welcome

Christ Church Grammar has been fortunate enough to receive one of four Australian invitations to the sixth International Children's Winter Games in Ufa, Russia next year. Students who turn 12 to 15 in 2013 are eligible to compete. The selected students will be representing Christ Church Grammar School as well as Australia. This is a truly unique opportunity for all who attend and one that will live in memories for a life time.
What are the games?
It is a unique participation event of winter sports that aims to enable, develop and advance the meeting, understanding and friendship of students from different countries around the World and promote the Olympic Ideal. The games are the only youth winter event of its type endorsed by the IOC.
Do I need to be an elite athlete to compete?
No…the games focus on competition through the spirit of participation, yes you need to be able to ski or snowboard but not at an elite level. Any student capable of intermediate runs is more than capable of competing.
The tour will involve a significant cultural experience for all who attend with a stop over and sight seeing tour in Moscow on route to the games and a training camp in Shiga Kogen, Japan to prepare the team for the competition phase.
If you are interested in finding out more about the games, for further information or to register your expression of interest, contact Mr Dave Anderson, Director of Kooringal, at danderson@ccgs.wa.edu.au or on 9538 1061 or 0427 102 082.

This weekend’s sporting fixture against Scotch College marks the final fixture for this term. Team sports are a feature of the winter season and it is always heartening to witness the level of improvement that is made by teams as they progress through the season. The success of a school sporting team should never be measured simply by scoreboard results alone. The development of self-esteem, friendships, tolerance and co-operative effort are outcomes that can be far more significant than the number of wins and losses. In many cases, another important factor will be the relationships that are formed between boy and coach, who is more often than not, a member of the teaching staff. As this will be the second time we’ve played Scotch this season, teams will certainly be able to measure their progress. Good luck to all teams.
This week some parents will have received their son’s first semester report. Over the next 10 days the remaining reports will be mailed home for parents to read and we encourage you to do this with your sons. This period of summative reporting is provided to give feedback to parents about their sons and guidance to the boys about their progress. Our staff invest considerable time in writing these reports as subject teachers, tutors and heads of houses. The thoughtfulness and energy that goes into these reports, along with the advice given, is there to encourage boys to give of their best as they move through this phase of their education.

Year 12
Current ATAR Position
Year 12 boys have been issued with an indication of their current ATAR position. Some of them are feeling happy and encouraged; others have had a shock. The clear message that I have tried to convey to the boys is that if they are concerned that they are not achieving as well as they would like, all is not lost – there is time for them to make significant improvements over the next few months but they will have to be honest with themselves about their level of effort and try to ensure that they put distractions aside (Facebook and Skype are often mentioned by the boys in this regard) and really focus on their studies in the months leading up to November.
In the forthcoming holidays, I would suggest that they have at least a week's holiday, but they could then spend some time revising, making study notes, familiarising themselves with syllabus statements, attacking parts of past exams and so on. The Homework Diary (pages 6 and 7) contains really useful information on Study Strategies which the boys can use to add variety to their study practices. Term 3 will be intense and the lead-up to the Trial Exams in Week 10 will require a very consistent and dedicated effort.
As always, boys who are really concerned about their progress are encouraged to talk to their tutor and Head of House, as well as their teachers.

Postcard from Michaelhouse, South Africa

Last weekend was a blast! I didn’t have a sporting fixture at Michaelhouse so Dylan and I caught the bus to Durban. I planned to go out and watch some local school boy rugby but as the bad weather started to roll in, much of the afternoon was spent watching the Wallabies beat Wales and celebrating the Dockers win over Richmond. Later on, we departed for the rugby test match - Springboks v England. I sat right at the top of the stands to avoid getting rained on. The Springboks won, much to the content of the 40,000 South Africans in the stadium! After the game there was a big braai (barbeque) on the neighbouring fields. After eating one too many sausages it was time to go home.
The next day, Dylan and I headed down to the beach. Once there, we headed out into the waves for a surf. The relaxed waves and the warm South African water made for a very enjoyable couple of hours in the ocean. After the beach, we went shopping. The weaker South African currency made the Aussie dollar seem so much more valuable! After making a hole in my pocket (not so big, considering the amount bought) we called it a day. We jumped on the bus and headed back to Michaelhouse - content with the weekend just past.
