Friday 4 May 2012
This is one of those golden weeks in the life of the Headmaster. It started on Sunday when I accompanied our Year 6 boys to Canberra for their annual excursion. What a fantastic experience for the boys, with one of the highlights being a 15 minute ‘private’ audience with the Governor General, Her Excellency, Mrs Quentin Bryce, AC, CVO.
On Wednesday evening I hosted the annual Year 12 Headmaster’s Dinner. How fortunate all of us in attendance were to hear from our President of the Old Boys’ Association, Hamish Jolly (1983) and John van Bockxmeer (2002).
As the current Branch Chair of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), I had the good fortune on Thursday evening to host a cocktail function for current and former members of AHISA WA at Christ Church House. What a pleasure it was to be in the company of the vanguard of independent education in Western Australia to share stories with the man who moved Hale School from the city to Wembley Downs and to be able to host the principals of the Anglican Schools Commission schools, an organisation led at its origin by past headmaster, Peter Moyes.
As I write, I have just returned from the West Australian Anglican Schools Association (WAASA) celebratory eucharist where our Senior School Prefects, our leaders from the Preparatory School, Roger Bayly and Richard Wright, heard from our Archbishop Roger Herft and participated in a beautiful service.
This evening the Anglican theme continues with the combined St Hilda’s and Christ Church Grammar School Music Concert in the School Chapel commencing at 7.30pm. This is a wonderful annual event for the School and is a highlight for those boys and families involved in the music programmes of our two schools.
Tomorrow I will be walking the fields of Mt Claremont watching the opening round of PSA winter fixtures prior to representing the view of the School at the Jump in and Have Your Say Community Engagement Workshop organised by the Town of Claremont.
In the afternoon it will be a joy to officially welcome the Class of 1982 to their 30 year reunion just before the excitement of the Year 12 Ball at the Hyatt Regency on Saturday evening.
I feel very blessed to have the most wonderful job in the world!
As always, should you have any concerns about any aspect of the School and would like to make contact with me, please do not hesitate to do so by email gwynne@ccgs.wa.edu.au or by telephoning my Executive Assistant, Wendy Macdougall, on 9442 1502.

Headmaster
Last night our Year 6 cohort and staff returned from the tour to Canberra. The boys and staff had a wonderful time and many unique experiences. On the first day of the tour they met and spoke to the Governor General, Quentin Bryce, and her husband, Michael. The tour was filled with stimulating and interesting learning opportunities, with three key stops on most days.
I see the Canberra Tour as the culmination of the ‘big experiences’ the boys have while in the Preparatory School. Other big experiences that have occurred recently include the Year 3s learning about the indigenous significance of the Swan River while travelling on the river, and the Year 4s going to Penguin Island to enhance their learning about different environments. Soon the Year 5s will embark on their workshops with the Black Swan Theatre Company. For me, the big experiences are those times in school you will remember for the rest of your life and they also form the cornerstone of some rich learning.
You may have heard in the media that Dr Stuart Shanker has been employed by the State Government as ‘thinker in residence.’ Dr Shanker’s key messages focus on child emotional self-regulation, controlled impulses and delayed gratification. He suggests that the foundation of developing these skills in children are sleep, diet and exercise. I am sure if you attended the recent Parent Information Evening or Parent Forums you would recall hearing how we are working towards those goals with our boys and what role we, as parents, play.

Single Mothers Morning Tea
Celia Lashlie to speak to single mothers, Wednesday 23 May
Are you a mother who is the main carer of your son/s? Is your partner frequently absent? Come and chat with Celia Lashlie, author of the bestselling book He’ll Be OK: Growing Gorgeous Boys into Good Men, over morning tea about the issues of raising boys as a single mother. It will be held Wednesday 23 May, 10.30am to 11.15am in Walters Residential House.
To assist with catering, please RSVP to Christy Dangerfield at cdangerfield@ccgs.wa.edu.au by Thursday 17 May.
This morning I was updated on the return departure of our first group of Year 8 boys from the Leeuwin adventure. All reports indicate that it has been a great experience for the boys, sailing and being challenged by life on this square rigged sailing ship. No doubt we will soon hear the stories (and see the photos) about who climbed the highest on the rigging and whether anyone climbed the main mast to read the plaque on its top!
Last night, several First teams presented uniforms to the players for the match against Scotch. For many of these boys, it will be their first opportunity to represent the School in a First team sport, and the culmination of a goal they had set themselves early in their time here. On Saturday, this moment will be realised when they compete in the opening round of the PSA winter competition. In the weeks ahead, and for all teams representing the School, it is timely to remind everyone of the aims of our sporting programme.
Our sports programme is designed to develop players to be the best that they can be, not only as sportsmen but also as young men. In order to develop this potential, players must have a positive attitude and be committed to accept the responsibility of representing the School and participating in PSA sport.
The PSA Code of Behaviour in Sport highlights the following: Sport can play a role in promoting physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle, in learning to face challenges and strive against the odds, in developing qualities such as self discipline, perseverance, selflessness, obedience and in being a means of substantially building self-esteem. Good sportsmanship is an integral part of all that is best about sport. It includes a generous spirit, true respect for others and the game, graciousness, and a steadfast resistance to temptations such as attempting to gain an unfair advantage.

Sushi Fundraiser for Japan
Encourage boys to bring cash on Thursday for sushi pack and drink
Towards the end of last term, I attended the first year anniversary for the East Japan earthquake and tsunami at the Japanese Consulate General’s residence as a result of the Christmas cards our Japanese classes wrote to the tsunami victims. It was a grand affair with 400 people in the front garden (formerly the house in which Tim Treadgold grew up) and speeches from the Japanese Consul General, WA Deputy Premier and Michelle Roberts MLA.
Although understated, the effects of the tsunami will be felt not only financially but also emotionally for many years, particularly for the thousands of orphans. Last year, moved by the tragedy, the CCGS Japanese community raised money for the Red Cross Tsunami relief by making and selling sushi at school. It was a huge success.
The CCGS Japanese community has again expressed their willingness to participate in a similar fundraising exercise for the orphans of the tsunami. This will take place next Thursday on 10 May, as the Humanities department is holding an Asian Extravaganza. This would be a great opportunity to contribute to the 'Asian Extravaganza' by buying Japanese food and also raising money for a worthy cause. The cost of the sushi pack will be $5 (crispy chicken) and $1 for fruit drinks. Please make sure your son has cash on Thursday!

Year 7-12 Uniform
Winter uniform requirements
Second Term brings with it a change of weather and also a change of uniform for all boys in Years 7 to 12. The formal uniform that is worn each day for the next two terms is noted on page 120 of the School Dairy. There are some boys who need to improve the standard of their uniform. A black belt, polished shoes and a tie that is appropriately knotted, all contribute to a smart appearance and one that reflects pride in oneself and also the School.

The Bindaring unit of the Australian Red Cross will be holding their annual clothing sale at the Claremont Showgrounds on Saturday 19 May 2012. Help us to help vulnerable people within our community by clearing your wardrobe of pre-loved, unworn or unwanted items.
We are hoping that you may be able to help by donating men’s, women’s and children’s clothing. Shoes, handbags and other accessories are also much appreciated. All proceeds go to vital Red Cross community service programmes.
Please contact the Centre for Ethics on 9442 1705 for further information or deliver your donations directly to the Claremont Showgrounds from Thursday 10 May onwards. Enter through Gate 1 and go to the first building on your left, which is the Ellie Eaton Pavilion.
Recommended Resource for Parents
Talk Soon. Talk Often. A guide for parents talking to their kids about sex
Where do babies come from? ….Why do I look different from my brother? ….Why do I feel this way? ….How do I know if I am ready for sex? ….Why shouldn’t I post my photo online?
As a parent you will answer thousands of questions but the ones about sexuality and relationships are often the most challenging to answer. Some parents can be so worried about giving an absolutely perfect answer that they end up saying nothing at all.
You and your family are the most important source of sexuality and relationship information for your children. More than anyone else, you will lay the foundations for well adjusted, confident and healthy children who go on to experience positive relationships.
So what is the best way to handle these very important questions? It’s simple - talking a little and often makes a positive difference to your child’s sexual health.
In response to advice that parents needed support in their role as the primary sex educators of their children, WA Health has developed Talk Soon Talk Often - a guide for parents talking to their kids about sex.
This free resource has been developed to help parents initiate regular and relaxed conversations with their children about sexuality and relationships.
