Friday 5 August 2011

This week the School has celebrated Founder’s Day. In a more low-key format than previous years, our Preparatory and Senior School services have honoured the remarkable vision of the Anglican Church, Canon McClemans and subsequent School Councils, headmasters and other leaders among the staff and wider community who have contributed to the strength of our school today. At both observances, I spoke of the significance of the spirit of the School, using words from the School’s second Headmaster, Mr SC Noake as my theme:

‘Concerning the policy and scope of the School …….. The ideal is to train and develop all that is best in the manifold nature of boys, to educate them to be good citizens of the State and to develop the latent powers of body, mind, and spirit in each individual that he may be able to make the most of himself as he progresses through life. The realisation of such an ideal depends largely upon a good school spirit.’

I am very proud of the spirit of the School as it stands at this time. It is clearly evident to me that Christ Church has by the nature of its diversity a spirit that allows the individual to emerge. My sense is that despite the expectation of wearing a uniform that makes us look a little bit the same on the outside, we know that we are unique and special on the inside and it is from this knowledge that our strength comes. In speaking to the boys this week, I made it clear that to me our spirit lives in the fact that there is no cloned version of a Christ Church boy. By enabling each individual to shine, our school spirit grows and, as a consequence, the ideals that Mr Noake articulated above, many years ago in our history, are realised and from this our whole community benefits.

This morning we held our Founder’s Assembly. The boys heard from School Captain, George Haggett, Father Frank and Mr Garth Wynne about the history, spirit and future of the School. We also had two fantastic performances by the Senior School rock workshop and Yahoos. As part of the assembly we announced our student leadership for the term. Each term we change House and Class Captains. By doing this we give more boys opportunities for leadership and responsibility.

The responsibilities of the House Captains include presentations and speaking at assembly, coordinating house duty, working with the house co-ordinator to organise sports teams and build house spirit for the carnivals. When I speak to the boys I explain to them that their role as leaders is to make the School a better place and that the greatest test of their effectiveness is the actions they take when no one is looking. Do they help those in need; do they pick up the rubbish on the ground; or help solve a dispute. I tell them these small acts have a significant influence on the School and their peers.

Congratulations to the House Captains for this Term

The Parents' Association brings you the last of the series of four seminars presented by Anglicare WA, which will be held on Monday 22 August  2011. The focus of this workshop will be to provide information to parents with children in Pre-Primary to Year 3. These earlier school years are marked by rapid changes in a child’s development and experiences. This session will provide parents with the time to consider some approaches to equipping their child with skills and knowledge that will allow them to maximise their potential.

When: 7.30pm to 9.30pm

Anglicare Parenting Seminars -  Wednesday 10 August

The Parents' Association brings you the third in a series of four seminars for parents presented by Anglicare WA. This presentation will be pertinent to parents with a child in Years 4-6. The children in this age group are becoming more sophisticated in their cognitive, physical and emotional functioning when compared to their younger peers. The challenge for parents is to find a balance between their children’s increasing capabilities and their ability to cope with the associated changes and pressures along the path to adolescence. This sessions will provide parents with an overview of developmental milestones and explore some strategies that may help prepare their child for the journey.

Where: Senior School Staff Room

When: 7.30pm to 9.30pm

This event is booked to capacity.

Prep School Music Department Fundraising Practice-a-thon

Would you like to help raise money for Christ Church House while having fun, playing your musical instrument? Now you can and it’s easy! During Term 3, the Prep school Music Department is running a fundraising practice-o-thon, where boys can be sponsored for every practice session they do on their instrument.

How to do it
Ask your family, friends, team-mates and neighbours to pledge a small amount of money, either per practice session or just a set amount. A suitable rate per session would be between 5 and 50c per practice session.

Fill in the details below, and get practicing!

Then collect the money, put your information form and the amount you have raised in an envelope and bring it Miss Seaman by Friday 23 September.

The amount of money raised will be announced at the end of term assembly.

For any queries, please contact Miss Seaman at sseaman@ccgs.wa.edu.au

In this past week I have been introducing to my Year 10 class Personal & Spiritual Development (PSD) the book written by Sean Covey, '7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens'. Apart from learning these habits, we have been debating which is the most important or which one should be the first habit. On this occasion the boys agreed with the author, that ‘Habit 1: Be Proactive’ is first and foremost. It means to take responsibility for your life. Every day we can be faced with 100 chances whether to be proactive or reactive. Proactive students take responsibility for their choices, think before they act, bounce back when something bad happens and focus on things they can do something about, and don’t worry about things they can’t. They also have a ‘can do’ attitude and show initiative: they find a way to make things happen.

The best example for all boys in the senior school is the use of the very important organisational and reference tool, the School Diary. The boys have a responsibility to not only take it to each class, but to read the diary and ensure that they know the school rules and routines. Too often, when I am issuing sanctions to boys, they claim ignorance; to which I respond that ignorance of ‘the law’ is no excuse. This is something all boys need to learn from a very early age. I also remind boys and parents to check the last page of the diary, “What to do if…?” which answers many of the common questions posed by boys throughout the year. The two main vehicles for information about school operations, rules, routines, records, uniform and clothing and the like can all be found by the boys via their school diary, or for parents through the school website.

Years 7 to 12 Athletics Carnival

House Athletics Carnival - Thursday 1 September

The 2011 Secondary School House Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 1 September at the WA Athletics Stadium, next to Challenge Stadium. The stadium has very good facilities for athletes and spectators and we anticipate an excellent day of competition.

All Christ Church students in Years 7-12 are expected to attend the House Athletics Carnival. The dress for all boys is House singlet/polo shirt and House winter top, School tracksuit pants or PE shorts, white socks and joggers. All boys must wear House Top when competing.

Parents are most welcome to attend and are asked to sit in the seats at the east end by the finish line, or with the boys in House areas. Alcohol consumption is not permitted. Programmes will be available from the results desk near the finish line during the day. A copy of the event timetable is on the school web site.

Parking will be available on the northern side of the Challenge Stadium. The entrance is off Stephenson Avenue at the same point of entry as if you were arriving for a swimming carnival. Follow the signs at the roundabout. Challenge Stadium is a busy place at this time, so an early arrival is suggested to avoid missing the start.

Challenge Stadium charges an entrance fee of $3.00 for all non-student spectators. Cashiers are located at the entry points. Students do not have to pay on entry.

Public transport to the AK Reserve is limited. However, school buses provide transport for the boys to and from the stadium from the school. The buses leave the School at 8.00am and depart the Stadium at approximately 2.15pm. Boys wishing to use the School buses are asked to advise their Head of House. Boys travelling by car should ensure that return transport is arranged prior to the carnival as access to telephones at AK Reserve is restricted.

The venue will be open to athletes and spectators from 8.30am and the programme commences promptly at 9.00am. Drinks and food will be available from the kiosk along the main concourse. You may wish to take your own food and drinks to avoid queues.
It is anticipated that the Carnival, including the presentation of trophies, will be completed by 2.10pm. All boys are expected to remain seated in their House area until that time and will be dismissed by their Head of Houses.

We look forward to seeing you there.
