Meet Some Of The Team - Julie Knight, Year 6 Teacher

Julie Knight was appointed to teach Year 6 in 2007 year and has found the experience “very rewarding”. Julie trained and worked as a speech pathologist before moving into education, a move she says was inspired by her enjoyment of working with children. “I didn’t get to know the children very well through speech pathology”, she says. “Now I can focus on several areas with the children and spend more time getting to know them and their families.”

At the age of 10 Steve Saunders began a lifelong love affair with rowing on the Canning River. While his father coached the Aquinas College First VIII, Steve regularly dragged a single scull into the water, spending countless happy hours perfecting his stroke.

Meet Some Of The Team - Holly Miller, Year 1 Teacher

Year 1 teacher, Holly Miller is passionate about her role. She believes every child is unique and must be catered for in a way that is engaging and motivates them to learn. Holly says that her two years teaching Year 3 at Hale School were a great training ground for developing an understanding as to how boys learn and the ways in which programs cater for boys’ learning styles. “Hands-on and physically active activities are essential in order to connect with the boys’ interests and foster a love of learning. Flexibility and creativity is crucial when designing a curriculum for boys.” She says she uses the boys’ questions to provide unique and exciting moments within her classroom.

I was born and grew up in Albany. Whilst going though school I had no idea what I wanted to do once I left. My father used to say that if I couldn’t make up my mind he would do it for me - and his prime suggestion was entering the Navy. Seeing as I can’t even swim, that option wasn’t at the forefront of my mind.

Meet Some Of The Team - Ian Hardy, SOSE Teacher

Ian Hardy has been a member of the Social Science Department since 2002. He teaches Ancient History and runs the Year 9 extension program, Enigma: Humanist Variations. Ian was born in Calcutta, educated in Hong Kong, England and Italy, and graduated with honours in Modern History from Oxford University. He captained the university squash team, received a Blue for Real Tennis and was a member of the Authentics Cricket Club.
