The Christ Church Teacher

Christ Church teachers enable boys to find their place in a world that has endless challenges and opportunities. They interest their students in thinking, in doing, in accepting others and in being at one with themselves.

Our teachers inspire our students to value learning and help them set personal educational goals. They give the boys the confidence to achieve their goals.

Christ Church teachers bring a range of academic expertise and life experiences to their classrooms. They are passionate about their subjects and about teaching and they demonstrate confidence in their abilities. This is reflected in their energy and enthusiasm and in the diversity of their teaching practice. 

Our teachers are aware of the emotional development and particular needs of boys. They affirm and reward learning and empower and challenge their students. At the same time they encourage creativity and foster collaboration and peer learning. They use teaching strategies that are flexible and accommodating and that cater for different ability levels. Our teachers encourage student-centred learning and have high expectations of the boys. They model excellence in all that they do.

The Co-Curricular Responsibility at CCGS

Co-curricular refers to all those activities undertaken by students outside the academic and pastoral roles. There are a variety of co-curricular activities offered at the School and all teachers play a role in these as part of their professional obligation as a teacher at Christ Church.

The co-curricular responsibility for a Senior School teacher is based around the following example. Each staff member is required to coach or manage a Year 8/9 team for half the year and a Year 10/11/12 team for the other half. For a Year 8/9 team, this includes at least one training session per week and a Friday afternoon fixture. A senior team involves two training sessions per week and a Saturday morning fixture in most cases. Staff responsible for an activity other than sport can be expected to fulfil a similar type of commitment per week as the example given. The CCGS co-curricular programme includes a mixture of sporting teams that compete in the PSA as well as a diverse range of PSA, State and nationally based activities.

In the Preparatory School, the co-curricular load for a teacher may involve responsibility for coaching a sports team or an equivalent commitment to an activity other than sport. Coaching commitments usually involve training once a week, before or after the school-timetabled day, and coaching and refereeing a game as a part of Thursday sport. Where scheduled, a class teacher will have a shared responsibility with the School’s outdoor education staff for an outdoor education camp.

In addition, all Senior and Prep School teachers are required to assist with supervision or act as an official at School events. These may include inter-school swimming and athletics carnivals, socials and various inter-house competitions in the Senior School; and inter-school and inter-house sporting, cultural and community events in the Prep School.
