Elite athletes visit Prep School
Last week, boys from the Preparatory School met three sportsmen at the top of their game. Kookaburra Brent Dancer put the Year 5 and 6 hockey players through their paces while Wildcats captain Shawn Redhage and teammate Cameron Tovey towered over Year 2 and 3 boys.
Prep School Hockey Co-ordinator Mary Hookey said the Prep hockey teams were very fortunate to have Brent, a current member of the Australian Men’s Hockey Team, as a guest speaker and coach at training. Brent, who is from Perth, talked about his development as a player from a young age and answered lots of questions from the boys including tips about playing strategies.
He then supervised the boys’ warm up and a mini game, giving individual coaching to the boys while moving around. “The boys thoroughly enjoyed the visit and hope to see Brent on the TV at the London Olympics,” Mrs Hookey said.
On Thursday, the boys from 2HJ and 3GH were treated to a visit from National Basketball League (NBL) players Shawn and Cameron. The athletes, who played in last month’s NBL Grand Final, instructed the boys in dribbling, passing and catching as well as playing some fun games.
ELC Physical Education Teacher Kim Malajczuk said the boys were very excited to meet the players and were in awe of their 6’6” stature. “The boys loved asking the questions about their basketball careers and were really pleased to receive an autographed Perth Wildcats poster,” Mrs Malajczuk said. “Maybe we will see some boys from Christ Church in a Perth Wildcats uniform in the future!”
