Morris Gleitzman and Wendy Lawson Visit the Prep School

Morris Gleitzman, a well known Australian author came to Christ Church for a full day of sessions with boys and staff on Tuesday, along with Wendy Lawson PhD, who spent the day in the PMC, talking to boys and parents about autism.

Morris spoke to boys from Years 4 to 7 in the Chapel about his books and the writing process. He particularly focused on the development of characters and the need to present a problem in every story. Morris also answered several questions from the boys who were all drawn in by his chatty, discussion-style of presentation.

After lunch, Morris conducted a workshop with a group of advanced writers from Year 3 to Year 7, working on story beginnings and capturing the reader’s attention from the start of the story. The boys shared their writing while Morris gave comments and suggestions about their content. Morris was very impressed by the stories the boys wrote and boys were equally excited about being there and having their ideas discussed by such a high profile author. Staff were treated to an after-school session with Morris who spoke on the essence of story and Wendy who spoke about her experience with autism. This was a rare opportunity to hear from someone who has overcome great obstacles in her life to now educate others about how to be ‘inclusive’ of people with autism.

A big thank you must go to Wayne Revitt and AISWA for bringing both speakers to our school for the day. It was a day of great interest to staff and students alike.
