Year 4 Cultural Studies

A Year 4 Cultural Studies class had the opportunity to hear about an extraordinary woman’s experiences living in the North West teaching Aboriginal children this week.

Sally Herzfeld, the great aunt of student George Gare in Year 6, taught Aboriginal children at Forrest River Mission near Wyndham, and later at Port Hedland, where she worked with the Education Department.

Mrs Herzfeld later became the foundation Principal of Helena College Junior School and assisted in establishing the senior school at Helena College.

Cultural Studies teacher Angela Perry said: “She has been a huge supporter of community organisations all her life and has spent many hours volunteering her teaching skills as well as encouraging her pupils to support groups such as the Womens’ Refugee Programme for the Edmund Rice Centre, Penguin Club, Darlington Arts Festival, Guides, Quakers, Red Cross, Save the Children, Country Womens’ Association, and Meals on Wheels.”
