Basketball

The Secondary School basketball programme at Christ Church Grammar School promotes fitness and skill development for boys of all ages and all levels of ability.

There is a strong emphasis on the value of teamwork, the enjoyment of the game and most importantly sportsmanship.

The programme begins in Year 8 where boys learn a variety of drills that focus on passing, lay-ups and short jump shots. They are introduced to a basic man on man offence, a fast break offense, the importance of rebounding, blocking out and man on man and team defenses.

In Year 9, the warm up drills are extended to include mid-range jump shots and rebounding drills. At the defensive end, a full-court press and the 1-2-2 defensive trap are introduced to complement the fast break offense. The man on man offense is developed to include the high screen roll and the back door cut.

Year 10 marks the introduction of a zone offense and zone defense. Skills are broadened to include long-range and three point shooting. There is a greater emphasis placed on team and individual defense and the high tempo running game continues to evolve.

Senior school brings together all of the skills and knowledge from junior school with an emphasis on execution. Coaches evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the team and seek to implement a game plan best suited to the ability of the group.

The coaches come from a variety of basketball backgrounds. Currently we have coaches who have played and do play in the State Basketball League, coaches who have up to 20 years experience playing and coaching basketball and several enthusiastic “Old Boys”.

The Teacher in Charge of Basketball is Mr Antony Kalebich, who can be contacted at the School on 9442 1740.
