Famous swimming face visits Christ Church
Prior to the PSA Swimming win last week, Christ Church received a visit from one of the country’s best-known swimming identities. Long-time Olympic swimming coach Laurie Lawrence spent two days at the School’s swimming pool encouraging swimmers at the iiNet Team Sprint Cup and promoting his Kids Alive drowning prevention programme.
On Sunday, Laurie was guest MC for the Team Sprint Cup – a charity event that raises money for Autism West Support, which was established and organised with the help of head swimming coach and old boy Bill Kirby (Class of 1992). Laurie said he was really impressed at the number of children raising money and the atmosphere of the event.
On Monday, Laurie was back in the Christ Church pool with some much younger swimmers. The swimming veteran led a clinic for parents, babies and toddlers promoting water safety, skills and independence in the water. About six Christ Church families, along with others, took part in the session.
After the clinic, Laurie stayed to watch the Christ Church Swimming Team train. He said he was most impressed at the organisation of the session and congratulated Mr Kirby on his professionalism.
