Students Sample Sukiyaki
Year 11 Japanese students tried their hand at preparing a traditional Japanese meal as part of their studies recently.
The students, who were studying the topic of food and drink, cooked up sukiyaki – consisting of thinly sliced beef, simmered at the table, with vegetables in a mixture of soy sauce, sugar and mirin. The ingredients were then dipped in a small bowl of raw, beaten eggs before being eaten.
Japanese teacher Mike Armstrong said creating the steamboat-style dish with his Year 11 class had become somewhat of a tradition. “The students study the dish in class and then have an opportunity to eat it,” Mr Armstrong said.
It was a sure-fire hit among the class, who enjoyed conversing in Japanese over their delicious meal.
