International Geography Success
Year 12 student Patrick Mackenzie has recently returned from Japan where he won an individual silver medal in the Asia Pacific Region Geographical Olympiad.
Patrick competed against representatives from throughout the region as they were challenged in their ability to solve geography-based problems in a number of scenarios including Environmental Issues and Urban Planning.
“It was pretty intense, but really enjoyable,” Patrick said of the Olympiad, which involved five full days of fieldwork.
Aside from finishing with the silver medal, Patrick said it was fantastic to have an opportunity to immerse himself in other cultures.
For Patrick, this journey began when he entered the Australian Geography Competition in Year 9. He did so well that he continued entering the competition in his senior years, culminating in him being selected to represent Australia at this recent event and receive this exceptional result.
Head of Geography Allan Hallett said Patrick had a deep love of learning and a strong awareness of how people interacted with their environments. “To receive such a prestigious award in his final year at the School is a wonderful achievement and one that he should be very proud of,” Mr Hallett said.
