National Forum Gives Insight into University Life

Earlier this year, Year 12 student Sandeepan Mukhopadhyay attended the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra. Sandeepan, who was nominated to attend the summer school by Christ Church and sponsored by his local Rotary Club, joined more than 140 students from around the country at the Australian National University (ANU) for the two-week programme.

The forum gave students a rare opportunity to meet some of Australia’s leading researchers in the laboratories they work in. “We also got to see what university courses were on offer and found out about several others, which I never knew existed,” he said. Talks by university staff and past students from the programme offered an insight into the dynamic career paths available after gaining a science or engineering degree.

“The forum was an amazing experience,” he said. “Not only did it allow me to see groundbreaking research, understand universities, their courses and university life, it also gave me a great network of friends across Australia.” Sandeepan hopes to study mechanical engineering in Perth followed by a post-graduate in aeronautical engineering at the ANU in Canberra.
