Music at CCGS

The School offers many opportunities for young musicians to develop skills learning instruments, participating in various groups and ensembles, and being involved in a variety of co-curricular musical activities.

The Music Department’s numerous orchestras, bands, choirs, chamber groups and ensembles regularly perform in public. On a number of occasions each year they perform with musicians from neighbouring girls’ schools. Highlights of the music calendar are Arts Festival, the Anglican Schools Concert, the CCGS/MLC Concerto Night, the CCGS/St Hilda’s Concert and the Advent Carol Service. Staff regularly mount inter-state and overseas tours so that the boys can join forces with other musicians as well as present their works to a wider audience.

Our musicians also have the opportunity to work in musical theatre in conjunction with the Christ Church based Midnite Theatre Company.

Preparatory School

All Year levels in the Preparatory School have regular music classes. Active participation in vocal and instrumental performance is emphasised as are improvisation and composition, the creative aspects of music making. Various choirs and instrumental ensembles provide many opportunities for extra music making.

Senior School

All boys in Year 8 and 9 participate in the Creative Arts programme comprising Art, Drama and Music. In the Music component boys use the Keyboard Laboratory and the Computer Studio to develop a variety of practical music making skills.

Specialist music classes operate at all year levels for those boys with a particular interest in music who wish to prepare for the TEE Music Examination in Year 12.

Instrumental Tuition

Individual lessons are available through the Music Department and are scheduled during school time on a rotating timetable.

Bursaries and Scholarships

Christ Church provides a very generous scheme whereby a keen music student may qualify through audition for considerable financial assistance towards the cost of tuition.

A Music Bursary covers the cost of instrumental tuition. A Choral Bursary covers the cost of instrumental tuition for those boys who are members of St George's Cathedral Choir.

A Music Scholarship allows for a substantial remission of school fees in addition to the cost of instrumental tuition. Music Scholarship holders need to show an exceptional talent and level of dedication and are expected to assume a leadership role in music at the School.

Auditions are usually held in April/May and are advertised in the press.
