Fun and Finesse as CCGS Music School receives festival accolades
Preparatory and Senior music students received accolades at the recent Australian Band and Orchestra Directors Association’s (ABODA) WA Music Festivals, held at Perth Modern School. On the lighter side, the Preparatory Strings, conducted by Head of Music Kevin Gillam, won the annual ‘crazy photo award’.
In its first year of entry in the WA Schools’ Concert Band Festival, the Combined MLC/CCGS Prep Band, conducted by Miss Stephanie Harford, received an ‘Excellent’ in the B Division. The Combined MLC/CCGS Senior Band, conducted by Mr Thane Mandin, received a ‘Participation’ in the A Division.
Mr Gillam said Prep band’s result was fantastic given that it was the first time the bands had taken part in the competition with more than 100 bands from across the State competing.
In the WA Schools’ Orchestra Festival, the Senior Chamber Orchestra received an ‘Excellent’ in the Premier Division; the Combined St Hilda’s/CCGS Symphony Orchestra received a ‘Merit’ in the Premier Division; and the Prep Strings Orchestra received a ‘Merit’ in the C Division. Mr Gillam conducted all three orchestras.
“About 55 orchestras from schools across the State take part in the orchestra festival so to receive an ‘Excellent’ is very good considering only five ‘Outstanding’ marks were awarded between the two music festivals,” he said.
A fun end to the competition was the ‘crazy photo award’, judged by festival photographers Pro Photo Booth. According to Kate, from Pro Photo Booth, the Prep Strings won hands down.
