A Letter to the Onceler (Inspired by Dr Seuss’ The Lorax) Samuel Hurworth, Year 4 Dear Mr Once-ler, I was outraged when I first heard about your business. You must stop cutting down Truffula trees immediately. Your factory also makes masses of pollution. I strongly believe that this disturbing behaviour must stop. Your factory has recently been making more pollution than you are aware of. As a result of this, you have forced many animals to leave this previously angelic area. By cutting down trees, you have left poor Bar-ba- loot bears with nothing to eat and nowhere to play. Your factory produces masses of smoke, completely destroying innocent Swommee-Swans vocal cords. Furthermore, all of your pollution has turned the lakes to mud, leaving helpless Humming-Fish with nowhere to swim. You are cutting down trees faster than they can reproduce, which means that after a while you will run out of resources. Instead of just making trees into thneeds, you could also search them for seeds, which can then be planted and grown into more trees. You could also wait until trees are past breeding age before cutting them down. This way, you can have an endless supply of trees. By cutting down trees, you are making it a sad place to live. By cutting down trees you are putting biodiversity in grave danger. Trees provide oxygen for all natural organisms. Without them, no one can breathe. They also provide homes for animals like birds, most of which can’t nest anywhere else. This means that they have nowhere to breed, putting them in critical danger of extinction. Trees are an important part of the environment and you should protect them instead of endangering them. For the previous reasons, I strongly believe that you should stop making thneeds, or at least use different methods which allow the trees to reproduce. You are destroying animal habitat, polluting and over- harvesting, and why do you do it? To get rich, that’s why! Well here’s a message for you: eventually you’ll run out of trees to cut down, and then your business will fall flat on its face! That’ll show you! Did you ever once think about the final result of your business? Sure your rich, but because of that, everyone else is poor. Sincerely, Samuel Hurworth
