Friday 17 August 2012
With the arrival of The Mitre 2011 this week, one is reminded of the richness and variety of opportunity that is provided within the School. The pages of our annual yearbook are filled with stories of activity and engagement and the record of our achievement from a wonderful year. My thanks to all the contributors and especially our editor, Gemma Slater and members of the Community Relations team who have worked together to create such a fine production.
As always, should you have any concerns about any aspect of the School and would like to make contact with me, please do not hesitate to do so by email gwynne@ccgs.wa.edu.au or by telephoning my Executive Assistant, Wendy Macdougall, on 9442 1502.

I have recently read an article by Dr Madeline Levine, a psychologist with more than 30 years of experience as clinician, consultant and educator. Her book Teach Your Children Well – Parenting for Authentic Success in part discusses what research has found about parenting a child for success.
Dr Levine cites the ‘authoritative parent’ as the parent who raises successful children. The authoritative parent is involved, responsive and sets high standards, but respects the child’s autonomy. The Levine cites an experiment from Dweck, where children who are told by parents they are ‘smart’ are not as motivated to risk take with difficult tasks because, Dweck asserts, there is a risk they will loose their title of ‘smart’. Levine also cites the work of Baumrind who found that supporting a child’s autonomy and limiting interference results in better academic and emotional outcomes. Much of what Levine cites complements the ‘Circle of Security’ that Wayne Revitt outlined at the Parent Forums in Term 1. An illustration of this can be found here. It is the great challenge for us as parents – when to let go, when to welcome back, when to take control.
Levine writes “Their (Dweck and Baumrind) research confirms what I’ve seen in more than 25 years of clinical work, treating children in Marin County, an affluent suburb of San Francisco. The happiest, most successful children have parents who do not do for them what they are capable of doing, or almost capable of doing; and their parents do not do things for them that satisfy their own needs rather than the needs of the child… The central task of growing up is to develop a sense of self that is autonomous, confident and generally in accord with reality.”

Year 6
Drama Tour - April 2013
Sixteen Year 7 and 8 boys in 2013 (currently those in Years 6 and 7) will be invited to attend the Christ Church Drama Tour to Asia, to be held on the penultimate weekend of Term 1, 2013.
This is a unique opportunity for boys to experience a creative drama weekend and broaden their cultural and artistic understanding of this exciting part of the world. Students from a range of countries in the Asia Pacific region will join us at the French International School in Hong Kong for a range of play-building workshops run by theatre professionals from across the globe. The weekend is organised by the International Schools’ Theatre Association and forms part of their Middle School Festival Program for the year. These festivals provide exposure and experimentation in theatre skills and styles. The learning will focus on theatre making, an introduction to theatre performance, as well as the acquisition of new skills such as how to use ensemble techniques within the devising process.

Expressions of interest are invited by Friday 24 August (Week 5, Term 3), by contacting the Head of Drama, Drew Stocker, on dstocker@ccgs.wa.edu.au.
Bookweek
Bookweek - 20 to 24 August

Bookweek is fast approaching and will be here next week. It’s time to bring out the costumes for the parade on Wednesday and have fun! The Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Awards are announced in Bookweek and all the shortlisted books in four of the five categories are the focus of our library programmes this term from Pre Primary to Year 6.
At our school each year we celebrate books and reading in a fun way with activities in the Prep Library each day. See the timetable for the week, below.
MONDAY: Readers’ Challenge Competition at Loreto Primary School against five other schools. We have entered two teams this year. Lunchtime activities for other boys in the library include crosswords, construction activities and colouring, based on the shortlisted books.
TUESDAY: Book Quiz at lunchtime for Year 4 to 6. Boys make a team and answer questions about books. Prizes will be awarded to the top three teams.
WEDNESDAY - BOOK PARADE: Our boys dress up each year and parade around the oval. This year the theme Champions Read ties in nicely with the Olympics and boys will be able to dress up as a champion in any field of endeavor, not just sport OR a champion or hero in a story OR any book character. This will take place at 8.30am and be finished by period 2.
THURSDAY: Lunchtime activities in the library for boys not going to sport include crosswords, construction activities and colouring, based on the shortlisted books.
**During the following week, along with the senior school, we will host author James Roy, a popular Sydney author who is well known in literature circles.
Please encourage your son to get involved during Bookweek.

Daffodil Day
A touch of yellow in support of Daffodil Day - 23 August

On Thursday 23 August we will be supporting the amazing work of the Cancer Council by asking each boy to donate a 'yellow' (gold) coin or two and to wear a touch of yellow to acknowledge Daffodil Day. This may include a yellow shirt, hat, scarf or shorts. Please note this is not a free dress day. The boys are asked to wear their uniform, with a touch of yellow.
Each donation received will go to the Cancer Council to continue its work in cancer research, providing patient support programmes and prevention programmes to all Australians. Daffodil Day helps grow hope for better treatments, hope for more survivors, hope for a cure.

Yesterday we were privileged to witness some ‘Awesome Aussie Rock’ themed musical performances, well in a few cases that may have been a stretch! The annual House Shout is a choral competition where each House puts their vocal talents to the test. That I found myself tapping the pew to the beat means for me the performances were very engaging. Looking around the ChapeI I noted the boys in the audience where similarly enthusiastic and involved.
Iconic songs were performed like Jimmy Barnes ’Working Class Man’ from Romsey, the anthemic ’Holy Grail’ by Hunters and Collectors from Jupp, as well as ‘Your the Voice ‘ by Jon Farnham’s from Queenslea were all excellent renditions. The judges affirmed that the competition was tight but there was no match for Noake’s outstanding performance of Goanna’s ‘Solid Rock’ with backing didgeridoo by Aiden Albert. The atmosphere and engagement of all boys on Thursday was fantastic. Many hours of hard work by House staff and the Music Department have gone in to making this House Shout another memorable event.
Similarly, the exhibition of the House Murals in the Chapel forecourt displayed the creative talents of many boys who chose to get involved in this year’s theme to create an awareness campaign based on an ‘Endangered Australian Animal’. Each House design team created a positive image and message that incorporates their House as part of their design for their advertising billboard. In a very close contest, Romsey was judged as narrow winners from Craigie and Hill.
It is this sense of collaboration, as displayed by the House Shout and Mural competitions that underpins so much that is positive in engaging young men in a healthy competitive environment where they can feel part of something bigger than themselves.

Updates to the iPad Programme
As you will be aware, all students in Years 9, 10 and 11 have a school provided iPad. We continue to review the effectiveness of these as teaching tools and resolve any issues to improve effectiveness.
In order to address situations where an iPad has been damaged, lost or stolen several times, we have sought an alternative insurance arrangement.
The new insurance and School policy is that all damage incident fees will cost $250. Any lost/stolen incidents will incur a replacement fee of $500. These costs will be charged to fee accounts.
To speed up the replacement process, students will report the incident with the ICT Department and then I will write to you via email. I will also alert your son’s Tutor and House Master. The Tutor will consider what reprimand or consequences are suitable depending on the situation.
If you need any further information about the iPad Programme, please refer to the iPad Information Booklet here or contact your son's Head of House.

Traffic Management
From MLC regarding Corry Lynn Road - Pick up and drop off
Last week I had a meeting with the Claremont wardens and also the Department of Transport, after a complaint was made by a member of the public. There are a number of issues worth outlining from these discussions, about the traffic management on Corry Lynn Road.
1. MLC has no jurisdiction over traffic management on Corry Lynn or the slip road. It is only the police and Claremont traffic wardens who are legally responsible for managing traffic.
2. There is only one safe place to drop children and that is in the slip road. During the time we were meeting, we observed a number of parents who were either dropping their children off at the corner, parking in people's driveways or even dropping their children off on the roundabout. The Claremont wardens informed me that they would be asking Cottesloe police to conduct random spot checks to discourage parents from doing this. Not only is this dangerous for children, it also interferes with traffic flow as parents reverse on to the road.
3. When using the slip road, please keep the traffic moving by only dropping your child at the top of the slip road.
4. Kiss and Drop or use the 30 second rule.
5. At all times please let us think about the safety of our children. I know that we are all busy, but I would hate to have to call an ambulance for a child who was injured because a parent was rushing.
6. Over the last week I have been regularly going out at 8:15 each morning to observe the traffic flow. I have noticed that between 8:15 and 8:25 am is the peak period, however, by 8:25 am the traffic has usually cleared, so please consider coming a little earlier to avoid this congested period.
7. Can I remind parents that Corry Lynn Road has a 15 minute parking limit. If you need longer, there are over 200 spaces available at either Hadley Hall or the lower car park.
Finally, let us work together as a community to make the traffic flow on Corry Lynn operate smoothly. I believe if we all followed the above guidelines, we could remove many of the frustrations parents are presently experiencing. The MLC Community has also been informed of this challenge.

Duyfken arriving in Fremantle - 23 September
You have probably read that Duyfken is about to return to Fremantle. Thanks to the support of the Western Australian Government the Little Dove will be home-ported here in WA for the next 10 years.
After beginning the return voyage from Sydney earlier this year she has now sailed over the top of Australia and is currently located off Western Australia’s North West coast where our excellent crew has commenced sailing her south.
The Duyfken is scheduled to arrive in Fremantle on Sunday 23 September and planning is well advanced for a big homecoming event.
