Romsey wins in a nail-biting House Regatta
Published on: 29 October 2026
Romsey has edged out Queenslea in an exciting finish to the House Rowing Regatta, claiming victory by less than three metres after one of the closest days of racing in recent years.
Jupp and Craigie progressed from the first heat, with Romsey and Queenslea joining them in the final after the second. The deciding race saw Romsey and Queenslea battle stroke for stroke, with Romsey pulling ahead in the closing metres to secure the win.
It was also the first race day of the term for our Year 8 and Year 9 rowers, with several lining up for their first-ever regatta. The Old Boys returned to the water for the Challenge VIII against the Year 10, 11 and 12 crews, alongside the Methodist Ladies’ College First VIII.
There was plenty happening off the water as well, with the sausage sizzle, bake sale and raffle bringing the community together. Thank you to the DFC and to everyone who volunteered, helped behind the scenes, or came along to support the rowers.
The regatta finished with the christening of two new boats, the Chandler Family and the Justin Colangelo, honouring those who have played an important role in CCGS rowing.
The Chandler Family
The Chandler Family honours Owain and Henry Chandler and their parents, Marcus and Beverley, whose connection to CCGS rowing spans generations.
Owain was Captain of the School and stroked the First VIII in 2015 and 2016 before returning to coach and row with the Old Boys. Henry coxed three First VIII crews between 2018 and 2020, including the winning crew in 2019. He later returned to coaching, helping guide the 10B VIII to victory in 2026, and continues to row with the Old Boys. Marcus and Beverley have also been longstanding supporters of the program, helping with camps and supporting the boys throughout their rowing journeys.
The Justin Colangelo
The Justin Colangelo recognises Justin’s more than 10 years of coaching at Christ Church. During that time, he has coached five First VIII crews to finishes of second, first, first, third and second, along with several Second VIII victories. Beyond the results, Justin has mentored generations of rowers and fellow coaches, helping shape both the rowing program and the people within it.
