Year 8 students experience democracy in action
Published on: 4 March 2026
Year 8 Humanities students recently visited the Parliament of Western Australia for a hands-on lesson in how democracy works. During the tour, they explored the chambers, learned how laws are debated and passed, and discovered the roles of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.
As Parliament was not sitting that day, the students had the unique opportunity to sit in the Assembly seats and take part in a mock debate, experiencing firsthand the dynamics of parliamentary discussion.
The group also met with Sandra Brewer, MLA, Member for Cottesloe and Shadow Minister for Housing and Women’s Interests. Ms Brewer spoke about her role as a local representative, pathways into public service, and the importance of elected members listening to their communities. Students had the opportunity to ask questions, gaining a deeper understanding of the people and responsibilities behind state government.
Mr Jon Wyllie, Assistant Head of Humanities, said the visit was an invaluable learning experience: “There is no substitute for experiential learning. The students gained a real insight into how Parliament works and the important roles of those elected to serve our community.”
