Welcome back following what I hope was a restful mid-term break. While the weather was less than ideal, it offered a welcome opportunity to slow down and reset before returning to the pace of the term. My thanks to our Grounds team for their work in clearing leaves and debris across the campus ahead of students’ return. The School coped very well with the rain and strong winds, resulting in minimal leaks and only minor tree damage.

Last night the Parents’ Association held its AGM, providing a valuable opportunity for connection and the election of new members. The Association plays an important role in shaping the vibrant culture of Christ Church, and I am pleased to see it well-positioned for a productive year ahead. I thank our committee for their wonderful work and excellent support.

Our Chess team will compete in the Four Schools Chess Tournament tomorrow afternoon. This event is an important fixture in the Chess calendar and a key step towards the PSA competition later in the year. Christ Church has a strong Chess tradition, and it is encouraging to see such enthusiastic student participation. We also ensure broad access to the game through the House Arts competition, where Chess remains a central component.

This weekend, the Yahoos Choir will feature at Government House in the Fremantle Eisteddfod Junior Winners’ Concert, performing Eye of the Needle by Paul Jarman. The choir has a proud history at the School, established in 1989 by then Music Teacher Helen Wilson. Comprising students from Years 4 to 6, the choir continues to showcase the depth of musical talent within our School. We wish them the best of luck for their performance.

We are currently preparing for the commencement of the building works for PERFORM. This is a very exciting time for the School, and we will soon share changes to parking and traffic movements with our community.

We are officially in the countdown period for our first Giving Day which will take place next Wednesday 10 June. Giving Day will engage students in a range of age-appropriate activities and experiences designed to deepen their understanding of generosity, kindness and compassion. The Christ Church community is invited to give to the Scholarship Fund and PERFORM – both of which will make a real and lasting difference in the lives of our boys, now and into the future. All donations will be matched, doubling the impact. You can make an early donation by clicking here.

I trust you had a relaxing mid-term break. It has been great having a full complement of students back on campus this week.

The Year 11 and 12 students will now be resetting the clock after the exam period and should look towards how they can improve and/or consolidate their academic performance in the crucial second half of the year. Although this week may have had its challenges as the results are handed back, the important task is to quickly resume a solid work routine. Whether the results are pleasing or disappointing, they provide valuable feedback about progress so far this year and strategies for the second half of the year should be based on these results.

Following the Year 11 subject selection presentation, the Year 10 students are now entering a phase where their academic performance will be assessed and form the basis for decisions about their Year 11 subject selections. For some, this will elevate the need to make better use of the resources around them as they aim for desired outcomes.

All students should be aware that the 10% subject bonus in Maths Methods, Maths Specialist and Languages continue to apply in the calculation of the ATAR. While this should not be the reason to select a subject, it is important that students know this detail.

A reminder that the first port of call for any student matters, academic or pastoral is with your son’s tutor and not their academic teacher. The tutor will then reach out to teachers and then will reply to you.

Today in Chapel, we recognised IDAHOBIT by raising the flag to acknowledge the discrimination and exclusion still experienced by members of the LGBTIQA+ community. It was wonderful to see the support for this day of recognition by staff and students. We are proud that we can provide all our students with access to high-quality education that is free from discrimination.

Our Chess Team heads to the competition boards this week in the Four Schools Competition, which is the preliminary competition to the PSA Chess Competition next term. The team is looking good, and their preparation has been thorough. Best of luck to all the students competing.

The Year 7 to 9 Drama students are busy rehearsing for Midnite’s Life of Insects production which opens on Wednesday 10 June and directed by our talented staff members, Ms Jodie Busby and Ms Kalika Duck. Tickets are still available here

Is your son’s Consent2Go records up to date?
To assist our Health Centre nurses and staff co-ordinating the wide range of sport, activities, excursions etc, it is imperative they have the most up to date medical information for your son/s. We would appreciate if you could take the time and ensure all details are correct and that you have removed any past medical details that are no longer relevant.

If your son has anaphylaxis or asthma, please refer to the information below.

All Anaphylaxis Action Plans should be a version newer than 2021 and, where possible, the ASCIA 2026 plan. Plans must include a recommended review date aligned with the student’s next scheduled appointment with a doctor or nurse practitioner for renewal of the adrenaline injector prescription (approximately every 12 to 18 months) and must also include current family and emergency contact details.

If necessary, once it has been updated, please upload the new action plan to your sons’ Consent2Go Student Profile – MCBSchools. Students with Asthma must have an up-to-date action plan uploaded.

If you have any questions, please contact the Health Centre on 9442 1700. We appreciate your assistance to ensuring your sons’ wellbeing and our duty of care absolute.

  • IPSHA Speakers’ Challenge
  • Experiences beyond the classroom
  • Giving Day – Make an early donation

Each year, students from Years 3 to 6 are required to write, rehearse and deliver a speech to their peers on a topic of their choice for the IPSHA Speakers’ Challenge. The students’ speeches should entertain, persuade or inform their audience and incorporate effective projection of voice, gestures, eye contact and pace. The benefits of public speaking are multi-faceted and include listening skills, development of vocabulary and pronunciation as well planning and organising thoughts.

All boys present to their peers, with the two best speeches from each class in Years 4 to 6 presenting their speeches to their cohorts in the chapel. The strongest speakers will then go on to represent Christ Church at the IPSHA Junior and Senior Speakers’ Challenge held later in the year at St Mary’s Anglican Girls’ School. The Year 5 and 6 competition was completed last week, with Samuel Jacob (5JB), Patrick Holmes a Court (5JB), Paddy Strickland (6JJ) and Ryan Le (6RB) selected to represent Christ Church in the final. Well done to all boys for their efforts and we wish our four finalists all the best at the IPSHA event.

Each year, students at Christ Church engage with incursions and excursions to support their learning. Sometimes, these experiences may be used as an opportunity to commence a topic with an exciting experience that will engage the boys and other times, they may be used as an opportunity to compliment the learning taking place in class. Incursions and excursions provide real world immersion beyond the classroom, community connections and active learning opportunities where boys can form meaning connections between content covered in the classroom and beyond. Through the remainder of Term 2, Year 2 students will visit Samson House, Pre-Primary students will attend Scitech, Kindergarten will experience farm animals at Blue Bay, and Year 3 students will visit Herdsman Lake, exploring local environments and wildlife.

I hope all students and families enjoyed the mid-term break and we look forward to seeing parents on campus during our Term 2 parent teacher interviews commencing in Week 9.
