This year, Christ Church will be involved in a number of community ANZAC Day services, with their contributions taking various forms.

A group of our Senior Art students spent the final weeks of Term 1 recreating a historic banner presented to the 44th Battalion AIF in 1916. The banner was originally crafted and presented by citizens of the Town of Claremont as a symbol of honour to the local Perth unit during World War I.
Luca Muir Anderson, a descendant of a 44th Battalion member and director of the 44th Battalion Memorial, will march with the banner during the ANZAC Day parade through Perth City. On the last day of Term, a group of students visited the Town of Claremont to join Mayor Jock Barker in presenting the Banner to Luca, a poignant tribute to the history of the original banner.

Christ Church will also be represented in the Perth CBD ANZAC Day Parade, as our Cadets proudly march down St Georges Terrace to commemorate the lives of Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died in combat.

Every year, our Cadets support the Dalkeith Primary School with their ANZAC Assembly. This morning, group of Cadets accompanied by Cadets Co-Ordinator Duane Nurse, provided a Guard of Cadets and flag raising. It was a particularly special visit for Year 10 Cadet Wilson Senders and recent graduate Johnny Hamdorf (’23) who attended Dalkeith Primary themselves. Johnny delivered a speech to the students and attendees about his Great-grandfather who fought in World War I, a poignant reflection on those who dedicated their lives in service to our nation. Duane then delivered the Ode of Remembrance.

Tomorrow morning, two of our Army Cadets, Alasdair Cameron and Daniel Leahy will be laying a wreath at the ANZAC Day service in Claremont Park. This service is held on the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War and includes traditional proceedings such as The Last Post and poem readings. The service commences at 7.30am and concludes around 8.00am with a barbecue breakfast in the park. You can find a detailed list of community ANZAC services being held around Perth here.
