An excited group of Pre-Primary students embarked on a walk to St Louis Retirement Village to join residents for a birthday morning tea.

The class have been investigating family history and ‘what is a memory?’ linked to their Talk 4 Writing text Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. When reading about the main character Wilfred Gordon visiting the old people’s home next door to his house, discussions arose in the classroom about what a retirement home is, and how can we learn about some of their residents’ memories.

The students made some lovely memories with the residents, as they shared stories, gave residents paintings of their school they brought along, and gifted residents a special flower. The visit was topped off with blowing up balloons and sharing a birthday cake to celebrate one of the residents.

Pre-Primary teacher Ms Megan Bankes said the excursion was a wonderful experience for both parties. “It was such a delight to watch the boys interact and bond with the elderly residents. Beyond supporting their inquiry into family history and memories, the visit was a lovely reminder that intergenerational connections can spark joy and empathy for all involved.”
