There was plenty to celebrate in the Chapel last Friday as the sporting achievements of boys from the Preparatory School were formally recognised in front of peers, teaching staff and parents – including an Olympian.

During the assembly both the Coaches Award and the Fairest and Best sports honours were awarded to boys in each team sport and for athletics, cross country and swimming a Champion Boy and Runner-up were also awarded for each year group from Years 3 to 6.

In addition to the sports honours, the Potter Cup for Best All-Round Junior Sportsman was awarded to Ethan Parker.

Sportsmaster in the Preparatory School Brady Leckie commented “The boys have each demonstrated exceptional commitment and skill throughout 2020 and they are to be commended on their achievements.”

Presenting the awards at the assembly was Olympic Gold Medalist and Christ Church old boy Bill Kirby OAM (’92). Mr Kirby also spoke about he was introduced to swimming and discovering a passion for it that would lead him to win Gold in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. After speaking Mr Kirby was then interviewed by a panel of boys who asked him a few questions about how much he trained in the lead up to the Olympics, how his family reacted when he brought home a gold medal and what advice he would give to any students who might want to compete in the Olympics.
