As part of the School’s Science Week celebrations before mid-term break our Year 5 boys were treated to a presentation from guest speaker Heather Waugh. Ms Waugh – who writes under the name HM Waugh – is an environmental scientist, educator and author. Her debut novel – the ice-filled fantasy adventure The Lost Stone of SkyCity – was shortlisted for a 2019 Aurealis Award for Best Children’s Fiction.

Ms Waugh captivated the Year 5 boys as she spoke about how Science and English are not such strange cousins and how she uses her knowledge and experience in science to get ideas for her writing.

Ms Waugh then guided the boys through a series of activities designed to spark creativity and new ideas. One such activity required the boys to go A to Z through each letter of the alphabet and think of an object starting with that letter that would help a prince escape from a high tower. Her presentation had the boys very keen to share their ideas and they asked plenty of questions throughout.
