Christ Church’s Surfing Team has again won the Champion School Trophy for the Metropolitan Zone 3 in the annual WA School Surfing Titles, held at Trigg Beach recently.

Teacher in Charge of Surfing Simon Hunn said the team performed consistently to defend its northern zone title against schools including Scotch College, Churchlands SHS, John XXIII College, Duncraig SHS and Prindiville Catholic College.

Christ Church won the coveted senior surfing event with a very strong effort from Surfing Captain and WA team member Jake Edwards (Year 12) and Vice Captain Aidan Walsh (Year 12). In the junior bodyboarding event, Oliver Stewart (Year 9) and Kenny Cunningham (Year 9) finished third; Jake Patmore (Year 10) and Ben Edwards (Year 10) placed second in the junior surfing; and in the senior bodyboarding, Jack O’Grady (Year 12) and Josh Greenwood (Year 11) also finished second.

Jake and Aidan’s win meant they went on to compete as zone champions in the State finals against other metro and regional zone winners last Friday. Jack and Josh also competed in the senior boys’ bodyboarding event, again at Trigg Beach.

Mr Hunn said both teams did well in the messy overhead conditions to get through their heats, but sadly lost at the semi-final stage. “Jack and Josh were knocked out by Mindarie’s team, but did well in the tricky conditions,” he said. “Jake was one of the standout surfers in the competition, but despite some great waves in the semi finals, he and Aidan lost by a very narrow margin to Carine.”

Mr Hunn commended the boys for reaching this stage of a competition, which involves around 80 schools from across the State.
