Christ Church secured its eighth Head of the River crown in 13 years at Champion Lakes on Saturday. The First VIII took the lead early in difficult conditions and was never threatened over the 2,000m distance.

Christ Church had first choice in the lane draw after dominating in the lead up regattas to the event. Despite heavy crosswinds, the crew established a winning lead halfway through the race to win in 6 minutes 43.7 seconds, ahead of Guildford Grammar School (6:53.8) and Scotch College (6:55.5).

Director of Rowing Steve Saunders said the crew, including Jonathan Knight (stroke), James McQuillan, Michael McKenzie (Captain of Boats), David Latham, James Weight, Josh Greenwood, Harrison Bain, Rowley Walsh (bow) and Max Montanari (coxswain), were a highly motivated group.

“They have been a fantastic crew – consistent and workman-like in their approach – and that is the secret,” he said. “On the day, they went out hard and their skills showed.”

Five members of the crew are currently competing as a quad at the Australian Open Schools Rowing Championships at the Sydney International Regatta Centre this week.

Director of Sport Anthony Lynch congratulated the boys and praised Steve and First VIII coach Simon Cox (Class of 1981) on the success of the Christ Church rowing program.
