The year of 1973 was well represented by old boys Chris Stevenson, Angus James, Anton Stretch and Michael Brooke (all 1973) in the recently completed 2015 Outback Air Race. The race is a fundraiser for the RFDS and the participants in 28 aircraft raised over $560 000 between them. The race was held over 10 days starting in Esperance and finishing on Hamilton Island, Queensland. The overall winner was pilot Chris Stevenson and his neighbour and co-pilot of ‘The Rocketeers’ in Chris’s plane, a 2-seater homebuilt with a top speed of 180 knots. Angus James and his crew of Anton and Michael as ‘Juliet’s Safaris’ finished 6th, not bad given Anton’s career in the RAAF as a navigator. The race involved a route through outback Australia and over 5400 miles back to home over 40 hours flying. Chris, Angus and Anton are pictured below with Angus’s Piper Lance at Old Andado Station in the Simpson Desert.
