Darryl Smith (1958), an Associate Professor who lives in New Zealand, surprised all when he attended the Class of 1958 lunch, held on Friday 2 May, at Nedlands Golf Club. Darryl was not recognised as this was the first reunion he had attended – that we could ascertain. Fortuitously the reunion lunch coincided with Darryl holidaying in Mandurah and he rang Dick Sudlow to check it was okay for a foreigner to attend. Attend he did and Darryl enjoyed catching up with John Ellery, his best friend from schooldays and the rest of the crew.
Also at the 1958 luncheon was Bob Locke (1958) – driving his extremely modified Morris Minor. Bob replaced the Morris engine with a turbocharged Nissan A15 bored – the largest turbocharged engine allowed by the licensing authority. He hand built the utility back of the vehicle. Building the car was a major project but the biggest job was ticking all the boxes to get the vehicle licensed. Bob said the best part of it was the front tyres never wear out (they are never on the road!).
