Simon Zilko (1999) finished training as an orthopaedic surgeon in Perth earlier this year, and was awarded Fellowship of both the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and the Australian Orthopaedic Association (FAOrthA). He has since moved to Toronto, Canada, with his wife Nicole and son Baxter for one year of further sub-specialty training in foot and ankle orthopaedic surgery.
Before the sub-zero Canadian temperatures set in he used the warmer weather to train for some long distance races, and recently finished the Toronto Waterfront Half Marathon (18 Oct) and the New York City Marathon (1 Nov). With over 50 000 runners and more than a million spectators lining the route through the five boroughs of New York, he reports the marathon was an amazing experience, especially finishing through throngs of cheering New Yorkers in Central Park. He finished in a PB of 4 hours 20 minutes.
When he finishes his Toronto fellowship in June 2016, Simon will then move to Europe for six months for further training in London, Switzerland and the Netherlands, before coming back home to start a practice in Perth.
