LEGO is one of the most popular resources in the Preparatory School’s Innovation Lab. While our boys love to build, each creation brings opportunities to problem-solve, experiment and think creatively.

“By far the students’ favourite thing is our LEGO kits,” says Leader of Innovation and Technologies, Grant Haggerty. “They’re already familiar with LEGO from a young age, so they’re excited and confident to take on challenges and explore what they can create.”

LEGO Education gives students a hands-on way to develop problem-solving, spatial awareness, collaboration and computational thinking. They can experiment, test ideas, make mistakes and try again, while building practical skills in coding, STEM and innovation.

This learning extends beyond the Innovation Lab, with LEGO activities connecting with the Science and Technologies curriculum and supporting learning across areas such as Mathematics and Science.

The success of LEGO-based learning at Christ Church has continued to grow. In 2023, a team of CCGS students competed in the LEGO League competition, receiving the Robot Design Award, placing among the top six schools and progressing to the regional finals. Following this success, SPIKE Prime kits were introduced in 2024 and have since become a regular part of the Year 5 curriculum and Innovation Lab program.

Now, Christ Church is looking ahead to the next generation of LEGO Education resources, including Computer Science & AI kits. Designed for shorter, lesson-based activities, these kits could provide even more opportunities for students to build, code, solve problems and test their ideas within a single lesson.

From the early years through to more complex projects, LEGO provides our boys with a practical and engaging way to learn through play. As the resources become more sophisticated, so too can the challenges, giving students opportunities to develop their creativity, coding, STEM and problem-solving skills in increasingly complex ways.
