There has been plenty happening across Christ Church this Book Week, as students and staff have come together to celebrate reading, writing and a love of books.

Throughout the week, Year 12 Prefects have been sharing their love of reading with students in the Preparatory School, joining library sessions and reading to the boys. Kindergarten students also enjoyed a Book Trail, following the pages of a story displayed around the Preparatory School oval.

The week has also given us the chance to celebrate one of our own student authors. Year 12 student Noah Judkins spoke to a well-attended lunchtime Author Talk, sharing the story behind his novel, Life Beyond: From the Ashes, which he has been writing since Year 4. Eight years in the making, Noah hopes to send his novel to publishers after completing Year 12. He encouraged other students interested in writing to simply get started, explaining that one of the most rewarding parts of the process has been seeing his work develop and improve over time. Students have also been using Book Week to support a cause close to their hearts. Philanthropy Prefect Frederick Azis has been leading a Book Sale in support of The Next Chapter, the charity he co-founded with fellow Year 12 student Anurag Barua. Students were encouraged to donate their pre-loved books as part of a House competition. Primary school-age books will be sent overseas through The Next Chapter to children and schools in underprivileged communities, while secondary school-age books are being sold to students at a reduced price. Proceeds from the sale will help cover the charity’s transportation costs.

Our Barista Boys also got into the Book Week spirit, offering staff a free book-themed cookie with every coffee. The students hand-decorated takeaway bags with artwork inspired by their favourite books.

The celebrations continue today with the Staff versus Student Debate, exploring the topic ‘Books are obsolete in the digital age’, before Book Week comes to a colourful close on Friday with a special Preparatory School Assembly and the annual Book Week Parade. We look forward to seeing our youngest students and their teachers bring their favourite book characters to life.
