Christ Church Grammar School Co-ordinator of Army Cadets and English Teacher Major Duane Nurse deployed on Operation ‘COVID-19 Assist’ during the months of April and May.

Major Nurse also serves as a part-time Army officer with the Australian Army.

His deployment was part of the Western Australian and Federal Governments response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

During deployment, Major Nurse served as a Company Commander and was responsible for the military component of regional checkpoints, managing 100 Army and Navy personnel and conducting liaison with the Western Australia Police Force.

“I certainly appreciate Christ Church Grammar School supporting my Army Reserve career. Thank you to the Executive for having a policy framework in place and also to my colleagues for covering lessons during periods of service,” says Major Nurse.

“Without the support of employers and colleagues, part-time Army personnel simply wouldn’t be able to contribute to providing capability to Defence, or in this case, the local community.”

Christ Church was awarded a Defence Reserves Support Council Award in 2019 for the supportive environment in which it provides Defence Force members.
