I hope you all enjoyed a restful long weekend. The School marked ANZAC Day in several meaningful ways, with Cadet Sergeant Felix Maxted (Year 11) representing the School at the Claremont RSL ANZAC Day ceremony at Claremont Park, laying a wreath in remembrance. I was privileged to be in attendance, representing Christ Church Grammar School. Our Army Cadets took part in the ANZAC Day march in the Perth CBD, serving as banner ensigns and flag bearers for the 2/28 Battalion Association, of which the CCGS Cadet Unit is the proud custodian. Our PSA First teams also observed a moment of reflection before Friday afternoon’s fixtures. Thank you to the staff, students and parents who contributed to making the opening round of winter sport on Friday a success. It was fantastic to see all students begin their season together in a strong showing against Scotch College.

During this morning’s Senior School Assembly, we celebrated the achievements of our student athletes throughout the summer sport season. I’m proud to share that all codes enjoyed an outstanding season, with every First team finishing in the top three of their respective competitions. The School’s continued sporting success is a testament to the exceptional support of our staff and our strong partnership with parents, ensuring our students are equipped with the tools they need to succeed.

Next week, the School will welcome a special visitor, the Assistant Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Perth, the Right Reverend Hans Christiansen, as part of his Pilgrimage of Joy. This pilgrimage has seen Bishop Hans visit Anglican schools across the Perth region, reflecting our shared heritage and connection to the Church. On Wednesday 6 May, Bishop Hans will arrive at the School accompanied by a group of our boarding students before hosting a community service, to which you are warmly invited. The service will be held in the School Chapel from 6.15pm to 6.45pm and offers an opportunity to come together, connect with others, and celebrate our shared spiritual heritage.

I encourage all parents and guardians to download the CCGS App if you have not already done so. It is a valuable, centralised hub for key school information, allowing families to easily access updates relevant to their son. Through the app, parents can view timetables and calendars, receive important alerts, manage absentees, access Year Group Notices and academic information, and oversee their son’s MSA account. Further details, including download and setup instructions, are available here.

Last Friday saw all junior and senior teams take on Scotch in the ANZAC gala day round. There was a great carnival-like atmosphere as I walked around the grounds, and it was great to see the support for the Junior games by the Senior students and vice versa. As we head into Round 2, and as the daylight hours start to fade, it is important to ensure arrangements regarding the collection of students are clearly understood.

Training (Years 7 to 9) – After training, students leaving from the venue with parents must check out through the staff member assigned to that team.

Friday Fixtures – If you are planning to collect your son from the sports venue after a Friday afternoon fixture, please ensure you have emailed the Teacher-In-Charge (TIC) by Thursday 12.00pm. Students must also check out through the staff member assigned to that team on departure.

Supervising staff members on return bus duty have been advised not to leave any students unattended at sporting venues. Parents should also note that there is always an ‘after-school’ duty staff member available on campus until 5.45pm who can be contacted on 9442 1555 should you encounter problems.

Details regarding your son’s sport fixtures, including bus departure and return times, can be found via the Sports tab on the School App. A reminder that sport is compulsory for all students at Christ Church Grammar School. If your son is missing training or a fixture, prior notification must be sent to absentees (absentees@ccgs.wa.edu.au) to ensure verification of your son’s absence. If there is a pattern of repeated absences, a medical certificate may be requested.

This morning in Assembly, I reinforced with students the importance of maintaining the highest standards of presentation and always looking their best when wearing the crest. Please note the following changes that will come into effect from Monday 4 May:

  • Blazers must be worn until the end of Period 2/Recess at which time they may then be hung in the locker
  • Blazers must be worn anytime off-campus (i.e., at appointments, Year 12 free period/Claremont leave)
  • Blazers may be removed when riding a bicycle to and from school
  • PE uniform may be worn to tutorial if your son has before-school training AND then has PE in Period 1 only

In addition, a reminder that blazers must be worn to and from school. Please click here to view the updated Student Presentation Standards.

We look forward to welcoming the Year 9 Parents on Sunday evening at the PA Sundowner and Camp Information.

  • Developing numeracy skills
  • Power of mathematics
  • Term 2 Parent Forum

Developing students’ numeracy from Pre‑Kindergarten to Year 6 is essential for accessing resources across all learning areas and for confident participation in everyday life. In the Australian Curriculum (Version 9.0), numeracy is described as fundamental to a student’s ability to learn at school and engage productively in society. It involves students recognising, formulating and interpreting mathematics, and applying it to real‑world problems and contexts. Across the Preparatory School, boys draw on numeracy in Humanities and Social Sciences (for example, using and interpreting data in Geography and History), in Science (such as representing results, making observations and predictions), and in everyday experiences including cooking, shopping, estimating, building, sport and play. Numeracy development begins with hands‑on experiences through play, inquiry and exploration in the early years and progresses to increasingly sophisticated problem‑solving, reasoning and communication of mathematical ideas in the upper primary years. Mathematics is taught regularly, with learning organised across the strands of Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.

Mathematics is an area where many boys shine, especially when learning is hands-on and connected to real life. Across the Preparatory School, students build confidence through games, investigations, and problem-solving challenges. We are always looking for ways to engage both students and parents. By working together, we strengthen boys’ persistence and enjoyment of mathematics.

For those parents seeking further assistance in supporting their son’s Mathematics journey, the Term 2 Parent Forum takes place on Tuesday May 12, and we are very fortunate to have Dr Paul Swan, a prominent Western Australian mathematics educator, present to parents on mathematics and mathematical thinking. This session is a valuable opportunity for parents to hear from a leading mathematical educator about supporting their son with his mathematical learning. Spaces will be limited (be quick to register as only 17 places are remaining), so if you are interested in attending the wonderful opportunity, please click here.

Last week, the class captains, library, sport, and innovation monitors, as well as Year 6 captains for Term 2 were acknowledged at our assembly, and I would like to wish them all the very best for the term ahead.
