- Meeting with our oldest ‘old boy’ aged 97
- Student designed ties for sale – NAIDOC Week
- The Strength Switch – 11 June event
Last week I was down south for a community gathering and took the opportunity to slip down to Augusta and meet with Frank Mullins, who at 97 is our oldest ‘old boy’ that we are in touch with. Frank resides in the Leeuwin Lodge and was really thrilled that Brad Downing and I dropped in for morning tea. Frank has a wonderfully sharp mind and shared with us some fabulous memories. He still has the Christ Church speech night program from 1936 in his possession. To put this in context, it was the year Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the Berlin Summer Olympics, the year Edward VIII abdicated, the year of the first public television broadcast in London and the maiden flight of the Hindenburg. Frank said that our visit “had made his year.” It was a momentous morning for us and you can read more about the visit, here.
This week, the PSA announced that commencing in Term 4 this year, a full round of summer sports will be played for Firsts teams. Previously the boys would play a single round, and this new approach will deliver fairness and equity with two rounds of competition. Specifics about what this means for each sport can be found here.
Every year the School’s Indigenous students create beautiful original art pieces that are displayed at the NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition for the entire community to enjoy. This year the boys have created ties, displaying their traditional art. There are three ties available:

Blue – acknowledging the importance of the ocean/sea/water
Yellow, red and black – showcasing the Aboriginal flag colours Pink – supporting women’s health and in recognition of Pink Ribbon Day |
Samples of each tie can be found at the Christ Church Grammar School Uniform Shop. The ties are 100% silk and can be purchased online for $25.00 each. Orders must be received before 15 June, so that the ties will be available for everyone to wear at the Christ Church NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition. All boys who purchase a tie will be able to wear it for the entire NAIDOC Week celebration which goes from 31 July to 5 August.
A reminder about attending a presentation on 11 June at 7.30pm by Professor Lea Waters, author of The Strength Switch. Professor Waters will reference the latest science of positive psychology, revealing the extraordinary results of focusing on our children’s strengths rather than trying to correct their weaknesses. She will showcase her science and direct the audience to useful tools and practices. This is a free event, to register please click here.
Wishing everyone a restful mid-term break.
