  • School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework
  • New parent dinner
  • Building Good Men Awards

On Tuesday morning we hosted the first Parent Forum for 2020. Kim Morcom, our Deputy Head (Pastoral) provided a detailed overview of the implementation of the evidence-based School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) framework which has replaced the existing Champion Quest Program. The new framework supports the social and academic learning of all boys (below is a summary of the presentation).

Our SWPBS fosters teaching and learning environments that:

  • explicitly teach boys expected behaviours and appropriate ways to interact within their community;
  • maximise academic engagement and achievement for all students;
  • are respectful and inclusive;
  • set high academic and behavioural expectations;
  • positively addresses classroom management;
  • targets support for boys who require additional assistance for their behaviour and social and emotional wellbeing.

SWPBS is a proactive approach based on the belief that:

  • relationships are the foundation for social and academic achievement;
  • student achievement is maximised when staff develop positive classroom cultures that promote and exemplify positive student behaviour and interactions and make students feel that they are both cared for and supported to succeed;
  • positive behaviour is learnt and consideration needs to be given to;
  • the individual needs of students while some students benefit from individualised support and;
  • combined with a rigorous academic program, this learning framework enables learners to deeply apply their skills, knowledge, and social-emotional awareness to the world around them.

Through the SWPBS, our boys will focus on the development of core values. They will learn about what these values look like in their day to day behaviours and interactions. They will also learn ways to display these values and will be recognised in class with immediate rewards and House points. The boys will focus on the following values; care and compassion, respect, responsibility and understanding and inclusion.

Boys will be continually guided and supported by staff through the implementation of the SWPBS. The new system will be thoroughly explained and modelled by teachers and will be utilised by both classroom and specialist teachers. Boys will learn how to navigate through the new model and will quickly see why this approach has such meaningful benefits.

Our new SWPBS program in 2020 complements our existing:

  • Code of Conduct;
  • Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program;
  • Pastoral care model;
  • Fortnightly Health and Wellbeing classes;
  • Religious education and;
  • Vertical House Groups (VHG).

The SWPBS framework has been described since the early 1960s and comprises of behavioural theory, positive behaviour supports, behaviour analysis and prevention, and implementation science that has been developed to support schools in supporting the needs of all students.

Another highlight of the week was the new parent dinner which took place Wednesday evening in Manjar Square. All our new families came together and were welcomed into the School by both our School Principal Alan Jones and Chair of School Council Matthew McNeilly.

Congratulations to our Building Good Men recipients for this week.

Best wishes for the week ahead!
