Our Pre-Primary boys have been doing their part for the environment by leading weekly clean ups by the river. This also includes collecting food waste for their worm farms and compost bins.

The REDcycle Program, a recovery initiative for post-consumer soft plastic, involves everyone collecting crinkly plastics such as bread, frozen food, pasta, and plastic shopping bags, biscuit packets, rice packaging, lolly packets, cereal box liners, and newspaper wrap.

Initially run within our Pre-Primary classes, the program has since expanded throughout the Prep School with boys in all years now taking part in the collection. Boys in the Prep School are encouraged to bring crinkly plastics in on a daily basis with boys from Pre-Primary collecting from each class on Fridays.

“The boys were learning about recycling in class and got the REDcycle idea after they visited Tamala Park in Term 1”, says Pre-Primary Teacher, Ms Letitia Simon.

“REDcycle is a worthwhile and meaningful program that sees the Pre-Primary boys demonstrating initiative, while acting on and promoting environmental responsibility. The program has resonated well with the boys, as they are all eager to participate and hence are developing a sense of awareness about the importance of recycling for the planet.”

Once enough crinkly plastics have been collected, the Pre-Primary boys will be taking (with support from older boys) the collected items to Coles and will fill their REDcycle collection bins. These items will ultimately be used to make sustainable furniture for schools around the nation.
