Last week, the Pre-Primary to Year 2 boys had a visit from author Wendy Binks, affectionately known as the Emu Lady. Wendy shared her great knowledge of emus and gave boys a drawing lesson.

Wendy has authored three picture books about Stripey the emu including Where’s Stripey?, Invisible Me and Scrambled Egg. She also owns two stores in Fremantle called Stunned Emu Designs.

Teacher librarian Kate Marshall said Wendy delighted the boys with her extensive knowledge of emus, fascinating boys with how male emus incubate eggs, what they do once the chicks hatch, the purpose of the chicks’ striped feathers and how the chicks avoid predators.

“She also described how she developed the character of Stripey, the emu chick, demonstrated her drawing techniques and discussed her next book about a numbat,” Mrs Marshall said.

Wendy finished the session with a drawing lesson showing the boys how to draw various animals using simple shapes and taking them through the steps until all had produced excellent drawings.

“The Pre-Primary and Year 1 boys worked hard on their fantastic drawings of Stripey, while the Year 2 boys produced amazing kookaburras,” Mrs Marshall said.

“It was a wonderful experience for all and we are indeed fortunate to have such a talented artist in our local area, who is willing to share her expertise.”
