The Preparatory School’s Outdoor Education program at Kooringal concludes for another year with several Year 6 camps having taken place in the first two weeks of this term.

Class 6JM was among five Year 6 classes to have recently enjoyed three days of immersion in Kooringal’s natural bush surrounds where they participated in a range of exciting activities including hiking, orienteering, initiative games, camp cooking, environmental awareness and Noongar mia-mia building. The boys also spent a night under canvas and learned how to cook their own evening meal on a Trangia stove.

“Kooringal offers a wonderful opportunity for the Year 6 teachers to spend time with the boys out of the classroom”, commented Mrs Joanna Morrison Mayo, 6JM Teacher. “It was fantastic to see how adventurous they were, participating in all activities with energy and enthusiasm, and showing resilience, persistence and cooperation throughout their time at camp.”

For the 6JM boys, making and cooking traditional damper around the campfire was a real highlight for many, while for others, rafting on the river was their ‘memorable moment’. They also really enjoyed the company of Kooringal’s friendly chickens, who took a particular liking to some of the boys’ breakfasts!

“Throughout the experience, the boys demonstrated a great depth of understanding towards the natural world and their place within it, further enhancing their understanding of the way humans impact the natural environment. Imbedded is a nature play aspect where boys are given the opportunity to explore and interact with each other and the natural world in a safe manner,” says Director of Kooringal Outdoor Education Centre, Mr Ryan Myles.
