The Walters Residential Community has kicked off its annual Gryphon Cup, a highlight of Christ Church boarding life. This intra-boarding competition brings together boys from Years 7 to 12 across four vertical houses, Doust, Meikle, Stove and Stretch, each named in honour of former Captains of Boarding. Throughout the year, houses compete in a variety of challenges, from weekly quizzes to pool and gym games and e-sports, fostering teamwork, leadership and house spirit.

The opening event of the year, always a favourite, saw all boarders gather at the Aquatic Precinct for a series of team-based challenges. Canoe water polo returned by popular demand, while a creative new hybrid of water polo and cricket had teams working together to manoeuvre a giant inflatable ball down the pool to topple their opponents’ ‘wicket’.

Todd Harnwell, Director of Boarding said, “The Gryphon competition is a fantastic opportunity for boys of all ages within the boarding community to interact with their peers in a friendly and competitive environment.”

“The younger boarders love the opportunity to engage with the senior members of the House and all boys are passionate about doing their very best to take out the title of champion for each event hosted.”

Kayde Kelly, Captain of Boarding added, “The Gryphon competition is something we all look forward to every term because it’s such a fun night for boys of all year groups to get together, have a laugh and compete in the games that are run.”

“Having that element of competition between the Houses makes it all the more exciting and the boys are pretty passionate about winning for their House!”
