This week, Christ Church proudly celebrates NAIDOC Week, recognising the vital contributions our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students make to the heart of our school community.

This year’s NAIDOC theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, honours the enduring achievements of the past while embracing a future led by empowered young leaders. It celebrates the visionary spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and the rich legacy passed down by their ancestors.

Festivities began with an exciting volleyball match on Tuesday, where our students faced off against Methodist Ladies’ College, which ended in a nail-biting 25-24 victory to MLC.

Yesterday evening, we opened our NAIDOC Week Art Exhibition in the Old Boys’ Gallery. The display showcased the vibrant collection of works by our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This year’s pieces feature uniquely designed lampshades, each adorned with iconography that holds personal and cultural meaning. The exhibition is open to the community from 12.00pm to 1.00pm on school days, until Tuesday 12 August. Click here to view a 360-degree tour of the exhibition.

This morning, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students delivered a powerful dance performance at the Senior School assembly. We were also honoured to have Mr Olman Walley present a moving Welcome to Country.

The celebrations wrap up today with a highly anticipated basketball match at lunchtime, as staff take on our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in a friendly but fiercely competitive game.

Through our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Program, we offer scholarships to students with the potential to become leaders in their communities. We also aim to create meaningful opportunities for all students to engage with and appreciate the rich heritage of Australia’s First Nations peoples. Learn more here.
