Kindergarten at Christ Church Grammar School

At Christ Church, we understand the unique strengths and developmental needs of four-year-old boys. Routine and structure play a key role in helping boys feel secure and supported, fostering confidence and a strong sense of self and wellbeing. Our Kindergarten classrooms are spacious, inspiring, and ever-evolving to support learning through exploration and discovery. These thoughtfully designed environments provide the time and space for boys to grow physically, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Each classroom is led by an experienced Early Childhood-qualified teacher and assistant, maintaining a low 1:10 staff-to-student ratio to ensure every boy receives individualised attention and care.

Our play-based program is intentionally designed to foster curiosity and encourage exploration. Guided by the interests of the boys, our curriculum is informed by:

  • The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
  • The Western Australian Kindergarten Curriculum Guidelines (WAKCG)
  • The National Quality Standards (NQS)

Throughout the day, boys are immersed in literacy and numeracy learning. Our literacy-rich environment is supported by the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Program, Talk for Writing, and from Term 4, Sounds Write. Numeracy concepts are introduced through playful and engaging activities aligned with the work of Dr Paul Swan, using whole-class, small-group and individual instruction. Songs, rhymes, movement and hands-on tasks are embedded throughout the day to reinforce these foundational skills.

Students also participate in a variety of specialist classes across the fortnightly timetable, including:

  • Music
  • Library
  • Physical Education
  • Mandarin
  • Art

These experiences enhance the classroom program and support the development of fine and gross motor skills, expressive and receptive language, creativity, and adaptability. Many specialist teachers conduct their sessions within the Kindergarten classroom to support smooth transitions. As the year progresses, boys begin visiting specialist learning spaces in preparation for Pre-Primary.

Self-help skills are a core focus of our program. Teachers work closely with families to support the ongoing development of independent toileting and personal hygiene routines. As the year advances, boys are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for everyday tasks, helping them build confidence and resilience.

We are fortunate to have an onsite speech and language pathologist and occupational therapist who can provide observations, support, and services where needed.

A strong emphasis is also placed on social and emotional development. Boys are explicitly taught how to interact positively with peers, build and maintain friendships, express and regulate emotions, and follow classroom routines. We use The Zones of Regulation to help students identify and manage their emotions and energy levels in a constructive way.

Understanding that children develop at their own pace, our Kindergarten program is offered as a three-, four- or five-day model, with attendance on consecutive days to help establish consistency and a sense of belonging. From Semester 2, all students are required to attend four consecutive days or five days per week.

From 2027, families will be able to choose from the following attendance options:

  • Three days: Monday to Wednesday
  • Four days: Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday
  • Five days: Monday to Friday

From Semester 2, students must attend either four consecutive days (Monday to Thursday or Tuesday to Friday) or five days per week.
