Pre-Primary
Pre-Primary at Christ Church Grammar School
Pre-Primary marks the beginning of compulsory full-time schooling and lays the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Our teachers draw on a range of guiding frameworks to design programs that are both play-based and responsive to the boys’ interests and developmental needs. These include:
- The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF)
- The Western Australian Curriculum
- The National Quality Standards (NQS)
Teaching and learning in Pre-Primary is a balance of explicit instruction and inquiry-based learning. Literacy and numeracy are key focus areas, delivered through a combination of whole-class instruction and small-group activities. Concepts from Science, History, Geography and Health are integrated across the curriculum, often explored through hands-on, play-based experiences that encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and collaborative learning.
Boys also participate in specialist programs, which further enrich their learning and development. These include:
- Art
- Music
- Physical Education
- Mandarin
- Library
- Drama
A highlight of the Pre-Primary experience is time spent at the Swan River Precinct, where boys are encouraged to explore the natural environment, develop an understanding of local ecosystems, and build a sense of connection to Country. These sessions also foster an appreciation of the cultural significance of this land to the Whadjuk Noongar people.
In addition, boys may be invited to participate in sessions with staff from our Learning Development Centre and Centre for Excellence. Invitations are extended to families following initial testing and group trials. Placement in these groups is based on demonstrated performance rather than potential, and groupings remain flexible throughout the year in response to each boy’s progress and needs.
