Years 1 and 2
Years 1 and 2 at Christ Church Grammar School
Our teachers work collaboratively to develop engaging programs aligned with the Western Australian Curriculum and guided by the principles of the Early Years Learning Framework. Literacy instruction is consolidated through Heggerty Phonemic Awareness (Year 1) Talk for Writing and Sounds Write, while numeracy concepts are explored using a blend of play-based learning, structured written tasks and formal written work. Science, History and Geography are integrated into classroom learning throughout the year. Classes are capped at 24 students, with a qualified Education Assistant supporting classes, allowing for differentiated and individualised instruction. Assessment continues throughout the year, with regular updates to parents on their son’s development against SCASA Judging Standards.
Students in Years 1 and 2 have access to a full suite of specialist subjects, delivered as part of their fortnightly timetable. These include:
- Art
- Library
- Music
- Drama
- Mandarin
- Physical Education
- Health and Wellbeing
- Innovation
In addition, students may be invited to participate in targeted sessions with staff from the Learning Development Centre and Centre for Excellence. These invitations are extended to families following initial testing and group trials. A range of co-curricular activities is also available before and after school, including Construction Club, Drawing Club, Cricket, Minkey, Tennis and Bricks 4 Kidz.
Years 1 and 2 students enjoy a series of experiences outside the classroom to complement their learning. These include incursions, local excursions and regular sessions at the Christ Church River Precinct.
